I am to consider with you this morning an idea of God which is somewhat new, but which is growing, it seems to me, in significance and in beauty with every passing day. Of course this idea of God, like every other which has been conceived by the mind of men, utterly fails to provide any adequate expression of the fullness of the divine reality. Of one thing only, concerning the character of God, can we be perfectly sure, as Herbert Spencer said many years ago, and that is that he is infinitely greater and more wonderful than it will ever be possible for the human mind to comprehend, much less define. And yet we must call God something, or he will cease to exist for us altogether. We must try to express our thought of him in some feeble way, else he will become not only what
