PREFACE.

IN offering this little work to the public, the author has endeavoured to supply a deficiency which has long been felt by

those engaged in tuition-namely, the absence of an elementary work in German for the assistance of those who wish to acquire the power of conversing in that language with facility.

Wishing to combine interest with utility, he has selected as the subject of the conversations, a voyage up the Rhine, and has introduced into the work many facts connected with the history and geography of the several towns mentioned.
