s in humane bodies, some parts

are vital, others only integrall, some necessary to the being, others to the well being, incegrity, and

beauty of them : So it is in Theologicall Doctrines , some are more fundamental, and immediacly necessary to life and Godlines others such as do greatly accomplish and adorn Christians that have accained unco chem, and are of singular use for the edification of the Church, though not so primarily belonging to the very vicals and eflentials of Faith and Holineffe.

Now because multitudes of crdinary ChriAtians, either through the exigence of their

particular callings, or chrough the narrownesle of their capacities , waac boch cime and strength to procure such plentiful mçasures of knowledge, as many others, whose lcisore is greater,

and intellectuals stronger, have atcained unto : Therefore the Lord hath from cime co cime stirred up zealous and faithful men to commit unto writing those primary and most necessary Doctrines of Faith and Duty which are common to great and smal, and of principal use for ordering their converfacions arighe in every relation wherein they stand towards God and men.

Of this forc were Bafil's Moralia & Regula, Ambrose his Book De officiis, Augustin's Enchi. ridion, Bernards Tractacs De interiore domo, De Confcientia, De ordine vite, De Dilectione Dei, de modo bene vivendi, and ocher the like writings of the Ancients.

Amongst our felves in this age, several Books of this nacure have been written. Mr. Rozers his feven Treacises, Mr. Paul Baine hís Directions for a godly life, Mr. Fohn Domonsham his Guide to Godlineffé and Christian warfare. The Practife of Piecy, Me, Scuddat's

vers others of the fame kind." of which some possibly may be of too great a price for every poor min to procure, and too large for him to read quickly over. However, the fame miSerials managed by the differenc gifts of several instruments, and presfed by neie Arguments and Motives, do bring to the Conscience a fuller evidence, and awaken the heart enco a

Amongst Books of this Nature, I commend unto the Christian Reader çhis Manual, which I have read with great satisfaction and delighr, Ic hath many things to render it acceptable so such judicious Palats as are best pleased wich Savoury and serious things, 1. The variety and neceßicy of the maccers therein handled: Such as are self knowledge and examinacion: Repentance and self.judgiog, living by Faith; watchfulncfse over our hearts, words, and waies: communion with God in spiritual duties, faithfulnesse in our particular callings and relations, GA 3, The pertinency of the Scriptores produced for confirmation of the Truths which they refer unto. 3. The graciousnefle, favourinesle, and whollomnesse of the Language, becoming the weight and holinesle of the matter. 4. The strength of the Arguments whereby the duties are pressed.

5. The Brevity of the whole, which rendrech iç chę ficcer for memory, meditation, and pra&tise: In all which the Reverend Author hath shewed himselfe a workman, which needech not to be ashamed.

Some Learned men have chosen rome one or other Book, which they have resolved to read over once every year.

this will keep you in peace among your felves,
Let there be no heart-burnings, contentions

brawlings, backbitings or defamings heard of
Among you. Help one another on cowards hea
ven. Imitate that which is good wherever you
find it, but learn evil of no man. Encourage
one another in the waies of Godlidesse. Abhor
to draw or intice one another to any finfull
course or practise. Do all offices of kindnesle
and humanity one for another. As you have
opportunity, let it be your desire and endeavour
to do good to every body, hurt to no body.
Learn that hard lesson of forgiving wrongs and
injuries, and praying for, and withing well to
those that are your enemies. 'Tis a hard lesson,
buc Gods Spiric can ceach it you. Remember
our Saviours Words in Macth: 6. 14, 15.
For if ye forgive men their crespasses your hez-
venly Father will also forgive you. But if ye
forgive-hoc men their trespaffes, neicher will
your Father forgive your crespases. And the
words of the Apostle, Col.3.12. Put on chere-
fore (as the elect of God, holy and beloved)
bowels of mercy, kindnesse , humblenesse of
mind, meeknesse, long-suffering. 1.13. For-
bearing one another, and forgiving one another,
if any man have a quarrel against any, even as
Christ forgave you, so also do ye. V. 1g. And
