PSALM XXIII.

THE God, whofe universal sway
The tribes of Heaven and Earth obey,
Yields all my wants a full supply,
And guards me with a fhepherd's eye.
His charge with prudent care he leads,
Where foodful verdure cloaths the meads;
With guiding steps vouchfafes to go,
Where ftreams of health and comfort flow.
The precepts thy pure lips impart,
My mind illume, and mend my heart:
Their faithful power my life fhall frame
To praise the great Preceptor's name.

Tho' Death fit brooding o'er the ground,
And spread thick gloom of horror round,
Vain all his terrors to controul
The purpose of my stedfast foul:
Jehovah's rod, a help and stay,
Confirms my step, and points my way.

With envious eye my foe will pine
To fee the plenteous table mine :
Oil from thy bounteous hand shall shed
Pure ftreams of fragrance on my head:
Fill'd by that bounteous hand, the bowl
With healing juices chears my foul.

Thy love, thy truth, fhall guide my way Thro' the lone vale of mortal day.

In thy blefs'd courts my tongue fhall raise The grateful hymn of ceaseless praise.

PSALM CXXXVII.

WHERE Babel's ftately current flows,
We fat, abforb'd in penfive grief,
When Sion's dear idea rofe;

And tears conferr'd their fad relief.

Our harps, neglected and unftrung,

Harps, vocal now alass! no more! Each heedlefs hand on willows hung, That fringe the river's winding fhore.

Tho' the gay note, and sprightly lay
To happier minds at ease belongs,
"Come," to our bards the victors fay,
"Come, fing us one of Sion's fongs!"

How fhall we fing, by foes befet,
Jehovah's fong in this ftrange land?
If, Sion! thee my foul forget,
May all it's skill defert my hand!

My lips let moping Silence seal,

Let blank Oblivion seize my lyre,

If joy in aught, but thee, I feel;

If aught, but thou, my song inspire!

t

Remember, Lord! proud Edom's race,
In Judah's laft and fatal day :

"Of Sion leave," they cried, "no trace;
"All, all her towers in ruin lay."

Ah! Babel's daughter! worn with care,
Expect thy fad reverse to fee:

Thrice blefs'd the man, who gives a share
Of Sion's bitter cup to thee!

Thrice blefs'd the man, whofe ruthlefs ears
Heed not the ftruggling mother's moans;
Who from the breast her infant tears,

And dafhes on the bleeding ftones!
