Glory for them. As there were two things which the Law required or demanded, viz. perfect Conformity to its Cmmands and Satisfacti n, or undergoig is Penalties upon the Violation of it, fo our LORD JESUS CHRIST anfwered both the preceptive and mandatory Part of the Law: He fulfilled it actively both as he hun'd whatever Evil it prohibited, and alfo did whatever Good it enjoined; being originally and actually Holy, he acted all along in an exact and univerfal Conformity to the Commands of the Law. The penal and minatory Part he Fulfilled paffively, by bearing its Curfe when he dy'd upon the Crofs. By the latter he fatisfied divine Juftice forwhat was paft, making full Expiation for Sin, whereby we are freed from Guilt and Condemnation by the former he meritted for the Time to come, whereby we are intitled to Heaven; by both which a compleat Righteoufnefs is wrought out for his People.

I. CHRIST by his Paffive Obedience hath anfwered the fenal or vindictive Part of the Law, being made a Curfe, and fo undergoing what the Law threatned. He hath fatisfied Divine Juftice for our Breach of the Law both original and actual, which could not have been done any other way; the Blood of Blis and Goars, Bullocks and Rams, could not take away Sin, for then CHRIST might have been spared, all the Beafts of the Forefis, and Cattle upon a thoufand Hills being his; but Juftice would not be pleafed with Thoufands

of Rams or with Ten Thousand Rivers of Oyl; nay, if a Man had given his Firft born for his Tranfgreffion, and the Fruit of his Body for the Sin of his Soul, all would have fallen infinitely Thort of anfwering the Demands of Divine Juftice; but CHRIST being an Infinite Perfon, hath made compleat Satisfaction to Infinite Juftice. The Dignity of his Perfon put Virtue and Value into his Sacrifice, fo that now GOD is well pleafed with him for his Righteousness Sake, Juftice feeing the Travail of his Soul is Tatisfied. Thus hath he condemned Sin in the Flefh, and removed the Curfe and Wrath of GOD from his People, Gall. 3. 10. 13. It is Said curfed is every one that continueth not in all things, which are written in the Book of the Law to do them; but CHRIST hath redeemed us from the Curfe of the Law, being made a Curfe for us; for it is written, curfed is every One that hangeth on a Tree.

You fee he hath by his Death and Satisfacti on procured our Difcharge and Abfolution from: the penalties of the Law, which we deferved by our Tranfgreffion; for as he became Obedient to Death, even the Death of the Crofs To by that Obedience we are pardoned, and freed from Guilt and Wrath, Hell and Dam nation, Job 33. 24. Then he is gracious unto him, and faith, deliver him from going down to the Pite How comes this about? I have found a Ran Tom (fays he) and Verfe 26. He will render t Man his Righteousness, i. c. he will impute and reckon the Righteoufnefs of CHRIST

the poor humbled Sinner.

II. CHRIST by his Active Obedience ath answered the mandatory and preceptive Pare f the Law, and fo hath merited for his People. To which End he was made under the Law, r fubject to the Law, bound and obliged in l things to conform to its Righteoufnefs, not nly as a Man and Creature, but as a Mediator nd Surety of his People.

Indeed if CHRIST had been only fubea to the Law as a Man, and fo bound for imfelf to do what he did, his Obedience could ot have been made over to others, or merited or others, becaufe it would have been a due Debt, and for himfelf; but feeing he obeyed ot as meer Man, but as God-Man, fo it be ame meritorious for others.

And indeed this Active Obedience was ne eflary, inaímuch as our Righteoufnefs and Tile to Eternal Life does indifpenfibly depend pon it; for unless the Law had been fulfilled, e could have had no Title unto Eternal Life y the Paffive Obedience of CRIST a Perion hight have been pardoned, and faved from Hell, nd yet not taken into Heaven, but have been nnihilated but by the Active Obediens of CHRIST Eternal Glory is merited, and is People in due time put into the Enjoynent of it, Titus 3. 7. That being justified by his Grace, we should be made Heirs, according to the Hope of Eternal Life.

The othe e Red R be of his imputed Righteoufnef is the White Robe of Jaberent Holiness, de d from CHRIST, and wrought in the rts of his People, called by fome th teoufnefs of Implantation; by which i a Work of Grace, the Root of the Mat a Principle of Holinefs in the Heart

Now there is a Stock of Grace and Holiness laid up in CHRIST for this very Purpose, to be given out to thofe that come for it. Hither it was that Divid fed for Sanctification, under the decays of Grace, Pfal. 51. 7. 10. Purge me with Hop and I shall be clean: Wafb me and I fhall be whiter than Snow. And Soul, doft thou want Grace? purifying Grace? Sanctifying Grace? Would thou be more Holy in Heart, and in Life and Conver fation? Go to CHRIS г, who is of GOD made unto his People fanctification, I Cor. 1. 30. He is the Fountain of ali Grace, and of his ulnefs have we received, and Grace for Grace.
