To contend earnestly for the faith once delivered to the faints. Jude ver. 3.

Τί γαρ κενοδοξε πολεμείς τον ακαταπολέμητον; σκληρὸν σου
πρὸς κέντρα λακτίζειν. σεαυτὸν οκανδαλίζεις, και » τον λόγον. σεαυτὸν
ἀλίσκεις, και ο τό πνεῦμα. σεαυτόν ἀπαλλοτριοῖς ἀπὸ της τῇ Θεο
χάριτος, και ου τὸν τὸν ἀπὸ πατρὸς, οὐδὲ τὸ πνεῦμα τὸ ἅγιον
ἀπὸ πατρὸς και υπο


Why then, vain glorious man, do you wage war against Him who is in-
vincible? It is hard for thee to kick against the pricks. You injure yourself,
but not the eternal word. You infnare your felf, not the Holy Spirit. You
alienate yourself from the love of God, but never the Son from that of his
Father, nor the Holy Ghoft from the love of both the Father and of the Son,
Epiphan. Ancor. p. 20.

AID an Author of great fame in the learned

world, in addreffing his work to a perfon, high in office, when I fit down to write on fubjects which interest the stability and fplendor of the throne, and the felicity and fecurity of mankind, I fummon myself in imagination, into your prefence, and think how you would exprefs yourself on these important topics, and how I fhould express myself, fo as to fecure your approbation and esteema: With fome variation I may observe, that when I ftand up here in the chair of truth, and confider that the fubjects I intend to treat of, refpect the infinite glories of the Son of God, in whofe prefence we all now are, and before whofe tribunal we must all fhortly appear; that the present and eternal welfare of this numerous audience depends upon the belief of the truth contained in the text.-With a facred awe, I enter upon the task, humbly foliciting aid of the Spirit from onhigh, that he would take of the things of Chrift, and fhew them unto us, and fo guide us into all truth.
