Alors Pharaon fit ce commandement à tout son peuple : Jetez dans le fleuve tous les enfans mâles qui naîtront parmi les Hébreux, et ne réservez que les filles. Quelque temps après un homme de la maison de Lévi ayant épousé une femme de sa tribu, sa femme conçut et enfanta un fils; et voyant qu'il était beau, elle le cacha pendant trois mois. Mais comme elle vit qu'elle ne pouvait plus tenir la chose secrète, elle prit un panier de jonc; et l'ayant enduit de bitume et de poix, elle mit dedans le petit enfant, l'exposa parmi des roseaux sur le bord du fleuve, et fit tenir sa sœur loin de là, pour voir ce qui en arriverait. En ce même temps la fille de Pharaon vint au fleuve pour se baigner, accompagnée de ses filles, qui marchaient le long du bord de l'eau. Et ayant aperçu ce panier parmi les roseaux, elle envoya une de ses filles qui le lui apporta. Elle l'ouvrit ; et trouvant dedans ce petit enfant qui criait, elle fut touchée de compassion, et elle dit : C'est un des enfans des Hébreux. La sœur de l'enfant s'étant approchée, lui dit : Vous plait-il que j'aille quérir une femme des Hébreux qui puisse nourrir ce petit enfant ? Elle lui répondit: Allez. La fille s'en alla donc, et fit venir sa mère. La fille de Pharaon lui dit : Prenez cet enfant et me le nourrissez, et je vous en récompenserai. La mère prit l'enfant et le nourrit; et lorsqu'il fut assez fort, elle le donna å la fille de Pharaon, qui l'adopta pour son fils, et le nomma Moïse, c'est-à-dire, tiré de l'eau, parce que, disait-elle, je l'ai tiré de l'eau. Aud Pharaoh charged all his people, saying, Every son that his born shall cast into the river, and every daughter ye shall save alive. ye And there went a man of the house of Levi, and took to wife a daughter of Levi. And the woman conceived, and bare a son and when she saw him that he was a goodly child, she hid him three months. And when she could not longer hide him, she took for him an ark of bulrushes, and daubed it with slime and with pitch, and put the child therein; and she laid it in the flags by the river's brink, And his sister stood afar off, to wit what would be done to him. And the daughter of Pharaoh came down to wash herself at the river; and her maidens walked along by the river's side; and when she saw the ark among the flags, she sent ber maid to fetch it. And when she had opened it, she saw the child : and, behold, the babe wept. And she had compassion on him, and said, This is one of the Hebrews' children. Then said his sister to Pharaoh's daughter, Shall I go and call to thee a nurse of the Hebrew women, that she may nurse the child for thee? And Pharaoh's daughter said to her, Go. Aud the maid went and called the child's mother. And Pharaoh's daughter said unto her, Take this child away, and nurse it for me, and I will give thee thy wages. And the woman took the child, and nursed it. And the child grew, and she brought him unto Pharaoh's daughter, and he became her son. And she called his name Moses and she said, Because 1 drew him out of the water. : |
