that faith unto Zion, Thy God reigneth*.— Sing and rejoice, O daughter of Zion; for lo! I come, and will dwell in the midft of thee. Ifaiah xlii. 2, 3. This Prophecy fets the mildnefs and quietness of the Meffiah, in oppofition to the fevere and spirited character of the Prophets.

Shall

Shall be judge the poor, and reprove with equity: and he shall smite the earth with the rod of his mouth, and with the breath of his lips fhall be flay the wicked. Righteousness fhall be the girdle of his loins, and faithfulness the girdle of his reins. The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because the Lord hath anointed me to preach good tidings unto the meek, he hath fent me to bind up the brokenhearted-to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prifon to them that are bound-to proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord'.-And many nations fhall come and fay, Come, let us go up to the mountain of the Lord, and to the house of the God of Jacob, and he will teach us his ways, and we will walk in his paths: for the Law fhall go forth out of Zion, and the word of the Lord from Jerufalem . — He fhall be a tone of stumbling, and a rock of offence to both the houses of Ifrael. This is the Lord's doing, and it is marvellous in our eyes. This is the day, which the Lord hath made; we will re

a That is, he shall not take cognizance of actions from his fenfes; nor according to outward appearance.

That is, the doctrine which he preaches fhall make the eternal feparation of good and bad.

Behold I lay in Zion,

joice and be glad 8. for a foundation, a ftone; a tried stone, a precious corner-ftone, a fure foundation; het that believeth fhall not be confounded1. — Į will do a marvellous work among this people. The wisdom of their wife men fhall perish, and the understanding of their prudent men fhall be hid1.. Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion; Shout, O daughter of Jerufalem: Behold thy king cometh unto thee he is juft, and having falvation; lowly, and riding upon an afs, and a colt the foal of an afs k. He fhall feed his flock like a fhepherd: he fhall gather the lambs with his arm, and carry them in his bofom, and fhall gently lead thofe that are with young P. They shall not hunger nor thirft, neither shall the heat nor the fun fmite them: for he that hath mercy on them, shall lead them, even by the fprings of water fhall he guide them. They shall feed in the ways, and their pasture shall be in all high places 9.

SECTION IV.

Containing fuch Prophecies as relate to the Death, Atonement, Refurrection, and Exaltation of the Meffiah.

Yea, even mine own familiar friend, in whom I trusted, who did alfo eat of my bread, hath laid great wait for me1. — And I faid, if ye think good, give me my price;

2 Pfal. xxii. 16. This Prophecy is defcriptive of the Meffiah's being put into the bands of the heathen. The word dog was univerfally applied by the Jews to the heathen. Thus our Saviour too applies it. See Matt, xv.`26.
