MY object in this series of graduated studies has been to exhibit the French language in its present condition, and to lead the youth of this country to a sound and thorough knowledge of the French tongue. In order to fit myself for my task, I have examined the principal treatises published in England and France, and I have endeavoured to give everything useful and nothing superfluous. Fully aware that the eye is of great assistance in studying any subject, I have made every page or every two opposite pages as complete as possible, by presenting at one glance the principles, the illustrations, and the exercises, thus saving learners the unnecessary trouble and waste of time attendant upon the arrangement of most grammars at present in use. The Accidence and the Syntax display a continual comparison between the two languages. All the rules and remarks are illustrated, first, by EXAMPLES, many of which are selected from the best writers; secondly, by FRENCH LESSONS (p. 95), the English of which is given in a different part of the book (p. 207) for the purpose of being retranslated into French; and lastly, by ENGLISH EXERCISES, in which the most useful words and forms have been introduced. It is hoped that with such a guide, teachers will no longer find it necessary to adopt such works as Noël and Chapsal's Grammar and Exercises, which may be useful enough in the hands of French boys and girls, but are not adapted, and never were intended, for English learners. I have prefixed to the Grammar a varied selection (p. 8) of stories, anecdotes, and extracts, intended to serve as a course of translation and reading, and to illustrate the rules laid down in the Accidence and Syntax, to which frequent references are made. The stories and extracts are of an interesting and instructive character; many of them are from the pen of Fénelon, Molière, La Fontaine, Voltaire, Montesquieu, Buffon, Rousseau, Lesage, Bernardin de Saint-Pierre, Lamartine, Victor Hugo, Béranger, Dumas, &c. In order to enable the student, having his Class-Book at hand, to prepare his lesson whenever and wherever he pleases, I have put at the end of the book a Dictionary, in which he will find the meanings of the words and idioms used in the different extracts. At p. 380 I have given selections from such British authors as De Foe, Addison, Goldsmith, Gibbon, Walter Scott, Macaulay, &c., as specimens of good English, to be turned into French, with the assistance of notes, by those pupils who have gone through the Syntax. |
