Chemical Notices from Foreign Sources.

NOTICES OF BOOKS.

General Cargo. By RICHARD E. GODDARD. London: Constable and Co., Ltd. 1916. Pp. vi+199. Price 4s. 6d. net.

THE author of this introduction to salesmanship has had business relations with commercial men of most of the civilised countries of the world, and has made a study of the psychology of the nations, so that he is in a position to offer some valuable hints as to how we may attempt to strengthen the state of our trade after the war is over. He gives brief accounts of his views relating to the manners, customs, and requirements of the inhabitants of the chief countries of the world, and his judgments appear to be shrewd and his comments to the point. He has many instances to give of German methods of doing business, and points out clearly the details in which they Our business men compare favourably with our own.

have undoubtedly many lessons to learn, and possibly such a book as this will put them in the way of acquiring most necessary knowledge.

Black Damp in Mines. By G. A. BURRELL, J. W.
ROBERTSON, and G. G. OBERFELL. Washington:
Government Printing Office. 1916. Pp. 88. Price

10 cents.

IN this bulletin the principal factors which affect the changes in mine air, e.g., the velocity of air in the passages, the gaseous (methane) nature of the seam, the temperature, and wetness of the mine, are discussed in detail, and experiments are described in which the proportions of carbon dioxide, which produse harmful effects, were determined. It was found that when the oxygen percentage alls below 13 serious consequences may ensue. Explosive proportions of methane become non-explosive when the proportion of oxygen falls below 14 per cent. Many experiments were carried out to ascertain how mine air changes as it passes through the workings, and the average composition of black damp (90.8 per cent of nitrogen and 9.2 per cent of carbon dioxide) were determined. The bulletin contains much useful and practical information for colliery managers in this country, although all the analyses refer to coal-mines in the United States.

A Text book of Organic Chemistry for Students of Medicine CHEMICAL NOTICES FROM FOREIGN
and Biology. By E. V. MCCOLLUM, Pa.D
York: The Macmillan Company. 1916. Pp. xiii+426.
Price 10s. net.

SOURCES.

NOTE. All degrees of temperature are Centigrade unless otherwise expressed.

THE short course of organic chemistry for students of medicine and biology given in this book is well planned, and the author has succeeded in making the subject attractive to the beginner, who is sometimes rather bewildered by the usual type of text book overburdened Comptes Rendus Hebdomadaires des Séances de l'Académie with details which he finds it almost impossible to assimilate. The pages devoted to the discussion of elementary conceptions are exceedingly clear and well written, and although necessarily a very large number of facts has to be included every effort is made to show their interdependence and to induce the student to trust to his

reasoning power rather than to his memory. Many structural formulæ are given, and in every case the facts are stated upon which the formulæ are based. Much attention is paid to those compounds which are of special interest in biology and medicine, and students of these sciences will find the book a really useful and practical guide in their chemical work.

Laboratory Manual of General Chemistry. By ARTHUR B.
LAMB. Cambridge, Mass.: Harvard University Press.
1916. Pp. 160+130 for notes. Price 1.45 dols.
THE author's experience has shown him that the average
student who has done some work in elementary chemistry
at school is very apt to suffer from over-confidence and
He has
boredom when he begins his college course.
probably acquired a more or less superficial knowledge of
most of his first term's work, and the problem of how to
make the best use of this knowledge is a very difficult one
to solve. The process of extending half knowledge often
leads to the flagging of interest, which is to be avoided at
all costs. The author's scheme of experimental work, in
which many new experiments are described, especially
such as are of a semi quantitative nature, seems likely
to be useful. Very clear and interesting theoretical
discussions are introduced, and full references for "as-
signed" and "suggested" readings are included. The
whole is systematically arranged, and the minute direc-
tions for performing the experiments and writing out the
reports should very materially reduce the task of the
demonstrator. The list of preparations is particularly full
and includes many rather unusual substances, and the
experimental work upon general principles is very well

chosen.

des Sciences. Vol. clxiv., No. 1, January 2, 1917. Absolute Density of Hydrobromic Acid.-C. K. Reiman. - Hydrobromic acid was prepared and purified by three different methods. It was synthesised from hydrogen, obtained by the electrolysis of a concentrated solution of KOH, and bromine liberated from KBr by potassium permanganate and sulphuric acid. The gas was dissolved in water and the aqueous solution fractionated. By allowing the middle fraction to react with excess of P2O5 a regular current of gas was obtained, which was purified by liquefaction and fractional distillation. synthesised gas was also purified by condensation with liquid air and fractional distillation in vacuo. The gas was also obtained by the action of syrupy H3PO4 on KBг, and purified by fractional distillation in vacuo. The mean of thirty-one determinations of the density was 3 644200002 grms. per litre.
