"Chemical Engineering" and the Works Chemist. -The prospectus of the early volumes of this monthly journal shows that it is doing useful work in the scientific world in publishing articles of conside:able interest in various branches of chemical technology. A very wide range of subjects is treated, and recent work appears to be well represented, while the list of subscribers includes the names of many of the most important firms of chemical manufacturers, engineers, &c. The Chemical Directory of the United States. This Directory, recently published by Messrs. Williams CHEMICAL NOTICES FROM FOREIGN and Wilkins, of New York, Baltimore, and London, aims SOURCES. NOTE.-All degrees of temperature are Centigrade unless otherwise journals, with a complete review of the advances in chemical expressed. Comptes Rendus Hebdomadaires des Séances de l'Académie des Sciences. Vol. clxiii., No. 25, December 18, 1916. This number contains no chemical matter. No. 26, December 26, 1916. Cristobalite.-Henri Le Chatelier, The author has The at giving comprehens ve information relating to chemical and metallurgical equipment, chemicals, chemical supplies, new methods and appliances, and trade and professional technology made during the last two years. It is thus a useful addition to the library of the chemist and works manager, and all who are interested in the buying or selling of chemicals, apparatus, or machinery will find it a valuable possession. MEETINGS FOR THE WEEK. "Memorials and Monuments," by L. Weaver. previously discovered the existence of a variety of silica X | MONDAY, 5th.-Royal Society of Arts, 4.30. (Aldred Lecture). characterised by a point of transformation situated at 215°. This transformation is accompanied by an abrupt change of the linear dimensions amounting to 1 per cent. author suggested that this variety of silica might be identical with cristobalite, and further researches have shown that this view is correct. He has detected cristobalite in various specimens of artificial silica. Bulletin de la Société Chimique de France. Formation and Properties of B-Amino-ketones derived from Aromatic Imines.-Charles Mayer. The author has already shown that the imines, by a reaction recalling aldolisation, combine with ketones to give 3-amino-ketones, R-CH=N-R' + CH3-CO-R" → R-CH-(NH-R')-CH2-CO—R". The aldehydes condense similarly, but subsequently undergo secondary reactions. The above reaction is not limited, as the author first thought, to methylated ketones. Thus an alcoholic solution of ethylphenylketone and benzylidene-aniline after a year deposited a crystalline mass from which the substance - In CoHs - CH - (NH-C6H5)-CH(CH3)-CO–CoHs, diphenyl-anilino-isopropyl ketone, could be isolated. the case of certain compounds in which the CH2 group is surrounded by two groups which give it an acid character, the condensation takes place similarly, but the compound formed then loses a molecule of primary amine to give the same compound as that obtained by the condensation of the aldehyde corresponding to the amine employed. Thus benzylidene-aniline reacts in alcoholic solution with cyanacetic ether to give ethyl benzylidine cyanacetate prepared by the usual methods. The B-anilino-ketones react with acetyl acetic ether to give a condensation product with elimination of aniline.
