LIFE AND LETTERS OF

REV. W. PENNEFATHER, B.A.

EDITED BY REV. R. BRAITHWAITE, M.A.

"The Life and Letters of William Pennefather' will be welcomed in thousands of Christian homes; but we hope that special means will be adopted to bring the biography within the reach of the younger clergy. We could not overstate our conviction, that as a model for ministerial study, this portraiture of Mr. Pennefather is invaluable. The happy combination of the devotional and the practical-the heart and the hand equally influenced by Divine grace-has seldom been exemplified in so striking a manner. The pastor whose people do not rally round him for Christian work, and who is tempted to regard his ministry as in any measure a failure, should study this volume from the first page to the last. Love and sympathy, a prayerful dependence upon the Divine Spirit as the Infallible Teacher and Comforter, a realising sense of the love of Christ in His Atonement and Intercession, a forgetfulness of self, a manifestation in the life of the fruits of the Spirit-these were the secrets of Mr. Pennefather's power, and these all may emulate."-Rev. C. BULLOCK, B.D., in The Fireside.

A

BAND of earnest men engaged in the service of the King of Heaven once said of themselves, "The work is great and large, and we are separated upon the wall, one far from another." If these words were true in the days of Nehemiah, they are true in a far more extended sense as applied to the Church of the present dispensation. A great work is entrusted to her sons and daughters, even the building of a mighty spiritual temple, the foundation of which was long since "laid in Zion," and the head-stone of which shall "be brought forth with shoutings," it may be at no distant day.

Meanwhile, the vastness of the work demands that the labourers be widely scattered, and while "separated upon the wall, one far from another," any words of encouragement or tokens of favour received by each several detachment, are counted as the heritage of all. It is surely on this principle that records of happy work, or lessons learnt amid difficulties, stories of toiling and of trusting, should be passed up and down among the King's servants. Our range of vision is often too circumscribed, and we become nearsighted by gazing at the few stones we are hewing or polishing, with an intentness which borders on exclusiveness.

We need to exchange our experiences, and to remind one another that the great

building is "growing, fitly framed together unto an holy temple in the Lord." Thank God for the many testimonies given, the narratives of facts, and words of strength that have cheered the hearts of isolated labourers, and stimulated the zeal of fainting ones. A few years ago they were welcomed with an eagerness of interest we dare not hope for to-day. The busy age is almost out of breath, not only with the strain of multiplied activities, but with the labour of recording itself in multiplied forms; and even in the Church of God, we fear there are some weary spirits, groaning under the twofold burden of doing much work and reading much about work.

It may well be asked, "Why add even a feather to the heavily-weighted scale?" And we feel bound to answer the question, not only by asserting the broad principle of intercommunication already alluded to, but by a few words of explanation as to the circumstances of the Conference Hall at Mildmay Park. The story of the building itself will be told on another page, but the position of the various agencies which have grouped themselves around it, is in some respects peculiar. As we look through the distribution of gifts and service in 1 Cor. xii., we can only find our place in the little word "helps," in ver. 28. This building was originally erected to help
