§ 108. James and John prefer their ambitious request.—PEREA.

MATTH. XX. 20-28.

Then came to him the mother of 35 Zebedee's children, with her sons, worshipping him, and desiring a certain thing of him.

And he said unto her, What wilt thou? She saith unto him, Grant that these my two sons may sit, the one on thy right hand, and the other on the left, in thy kingdom. But Jesus answered and said, Ye know not what ye ask. Are ye able to drink of the cup that I shall drink of, and to be baptized with the bap

MARK X. 35-45.

And James and John, the sons of Zebedee, come unto him, saying, Master, we would that thou shouldest do for us whatsoever we shall de36 sire. And he said unto them, What would ye that I should do for you? They said unto him, Grant unto us that we may sit, one on thy right hand, and the other on thy left 38 hand, in thy glory. But Jesus said unto them, Ye know not what ye ask can ye drink of the cup that I drink of? and be baptized with the baptism that I am bapti

he saith unto them, Ye shall drink indeed of my cup, and be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with: but, to sit on my right hand, 40 and on my left, is not mine to give, but it shall be given to them for whom it is prepared of my Father.

And when the ten heard it, they "1 were moved with indignation against 25 the two brethren. But Jesus called 42 them unto him, and said, Ye know that the princes of the Gentiles exercise dominion over them, and they that are great exercise authority upon them.

But it shall not be so among you: but whosoever will be great among you, let him be your minister; and whosoever will be chief among you, let him be your servant: even as the Son of man came not to be ministered unto, but to minister, and to give his life a ransom for many.

And when the ten heard it, they began to be much displeased with James and John. But Jesus calleth them to him, and saith unto them, Ye know that they which are accounted to rule over the Gentiles, exercise lordship over them; and their great ones exercise authority upon them. But so shall it not be among you: but whosoever will be great among you, shall be your minister; and whosoever of you will be the chiefest, shall be servant of 45 all. For even the Son of man came not to be ministered unto, but to minister, and to give his life a ransom for many.

§ 110. The visit to Zaccheus. Parable of the ten Pounds.-JERICHO.

LUKE XIX. 2-28.

8 And behold, there was a man named Zaccheus, which was the chief 3 among the publicans, and he was rich. And he sought to see Jesus who 4 he was; and could not for the press, because he was little of stature.

And

he ran before, and climbed up into a sycamore-tree to see him; for he was to pass that way. And when Jesus came to the place, he looked up, and saw him, and said unto him, Zaccheus, make haste, and come down: for to-day I must abide at thy house. And he made haste, and came down, and received him joyfully. And when they saw it, they all murmured, say ing, That he was gone to be guest with a man that is a sinner. And Zac

cheus stood, and said unto the Lord; Behold, Lord, the half of my goods I give to the poor; and if I have taken any thing from any man by false accusation, I restore him four-fold. And Jesus said unto him, This day is salvation come to this house, forasmuch as he also is a son of Abraham. 20 For the Son of man is come to seek and to save that which was lost.

And as they heard these things, he added and spake a parable, because he was nigh to Jerusalem, and because they thought that the kingdom of 12 God should immediately appear. He said therefore, A certain nobleman went into a far country to receive for himself a kingdom, and to return. 13 And he called his ten servants, and delivered them ten pounds, and said un14 to them, Occupy till I come. But his citizens hated him, and sent a mes15 sage after him, saying, We will not have this man to reign over us. And it came to pass, that when he was returned, having received the kingdom, then he commanded these servants to be called unto him, to whom he had given the money, that he might know how much every man had gained by 16 trading. Then came the first, saying, Lord, thy pound hath gained ten 17 pounds. And he said unto him, Well, thou good servant: because thou 18 hast been faithful in a very little, have thou authority over ten cities. And 19 the second came, saying, Lord, thy pound hath gained five pounds. And he said 20 likewise to him, Be thou also over five cities. And another came, saying,

Lord, behold, here is thy pound, which I have kept laid up in a napkin: 21 for I feared thee, because thou art an austere man: thou takes up that 22 thou layedst not down, and reapest that thou didst not sow. And he saith unto him, Out of thine own mouth will I judge thee, thou wicked servant. Thou knewest that I was an austere man, taking up that I laid not down, 23 and reaping that I did not sow: wherefore then gavest not thou my money into the bank, that at my coming I might have required mine own with usury? And he said unto them that stood by, Take from him the pound, and give 25 it to him that hath ten pounds. (And they said unto him, Lord, he hath 26 ten pounds.) For I say unto you, That unto every one which hath, shall be given; and from him that hath not, even that he hath shall be taken 97 away from him. But those mine enemies, which would not that I should reign over them, bring hither, and slay them before me. And when he had thus spoken, he went before, ascending up to Jerusalem.

§ 111. Jesus arrives at Bethany six days before the Passover.-BETHANY.

JOHN XI. 55-57. XII. 1, 9-11.

And the Jews' passover was nigh at hand: and many went out of the country up to Jerusalem before the passover, to purify themselves. Then sought they for Jesus, and spake among themselves, as they stood in the $7 temple, What think ye, that he will not come to the feast? Now both the chief priests and the Pharisees had given a commandment, that, if any man knew where he were, he should shew it, that they might take him. XII. 1 Then Jesus, six days before the passover, came to Bethany, where 'Lazarus was which had been dead, whom he raised from the dead.-Much people of the Jews therefore knew that he was there: and they came, not for Jesus' sake only, but that they might see Lazarus also, whom he had 10 raised from the dead. But the chief priests consulted that they might put "Lazarus also to death; because that by reason of him many of the Jews went away, and believed on Jesus.

And it came to pass, when he was come nigh to Bethphage and Bethany, at the mount called the mount of Olives, he sent two of his disciples,' saying, Go ye into the village over against you; in the which at your entering ye shall find a colt tied, whereon yet never man sat: loose him, and bring him hither.
