GARDEN OF THE SOUL.

ON PRAYER.

"Watch ye, and pray, that ye enter not into temptation." (Matt. xxvi. 41.)

"Is any of you sad? Let him pray. Pray for one another, that you may be saved; for the continual prayer of a just man availeth much.' (St. James v. 13, 16.)

"Ask, and you shall receive; seek, and you shall find; knock, and it shall be opened to you." (Matt. vii. 7.)

"Daniel knelt down three times a day, and adored, and gave thanks before God." (Daniel vi. 10.)

"It is certain that there is no means of grace more generally useful than prayer; and therefore we ought to entertain a great esteem and love for it, and to use every endeavour to pray well." (St. Vincent of Paul.)

A MORNING EXERCISE.

At your first waking in the morning make the sign of the cross, saying, In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost. Amen. Blessed be the holy and undivided Trinity, now and for ever. Amen. Or repeat the following: In the name of our Lord Jesus Christ crucified I arise; bless me, O Lord, defend me, preserve me, and keep me; and after this short and miserable pilgrimage bring me to life everlasting. Amen. Then adore God, and make an offering of your whole being to him, for that day and for ever. Then say the following prayers.

TAKE NOTICE.-If you have not time to say these prayers at home, then say the Our Father, Hail Mary, and Apostles' Creed, going to your work or at your work.

The Lord's Prayer.

OUR Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name: thy kingdom come: thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive them that trespass against us and lead us not into temptation: but deliver us from evil. Amen.

The Angelic Salutation.

HAIL, Mary, full of grace, the Lord

is with thee. Blessed art thou

amongst women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, JESUS. Holy Mary, mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death Amen.

I

The Apostles' Creed.

BELIEVE in God the Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth. And in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary; suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; he descended into hell, the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sitteth at the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy Catholic church; the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body, and life everlasting. Amen.

The Confiteor

I CONFESS to Almighty God, to blessed Mary, ever Virgin, to blessed Michael the Archangel, to blessed

John the Baptist, to the holy Apostles Peter and Paul, and to all the Saints, that I have sinned exceedingly in thought, word, and deed, through my fault, through my fault, through my most grievous fault: therefore I beseech the blessed Mary ever Virgin, blessed Michael the Archangel, blessed John the Baptist, the holy Apostles Peter and Paul, and all the Saints, to pray to the Lord our God for me.

May almighty God have mercy on us, and forgive us our sins, and bring us to life everlasting. Amen.

May the almighty and merciful Lord give us pardon, absolution, and remis sion of our sins. Amen.

An act of Faith of the presence of God. MY God, I firmly believe thou art here and perfectly seest me, and that thou observest all mine actions, all my thoughts, and the most secret motions of my heart. Canst thou suffer in thy holy presence a sinner, who hath so often offended thee? It is thy goodness and liberality which invite and

command my poverty to come to thee. Give me grace therefore to pray as I ought.

Come, O Holy Spirit! fill the hearts of thy faithful, and kindle in them the fire of thy love.

V Send forth thy Spirit, and they shall be created.

R. And thou shalt renew the face of the earth.

Let us Pray.

GOD, who hast taught the hearts of the faithful by the light of the Holy Spirit, grant that we may, by the gift of the same Spirit, be always truly wise, and ever rejoice in his consolations. Through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. An Act of Adoration and Thanksgiving.

[ocr errors]

MY God, I adore thee as my Crea

tor and my sovereign Good: and with all possible thanksgiving I acknowledge the many benefits which thou hast conferred upon me, in relation both to body and soul. Thou hast created me out of nothing; redeemed me by the death of thy Son; sanctified me by the grace of thy Holy Spirit; preserved me
