Terms Explained.

INITIALS.

The initials un, dis, im, in, ir, signify the same as not, or without, or want of. Thus, unkind, means not kind; unkindness, want of kindness; dishonest, not honest; dishonesty, without honesty; impatient, not patient; inattentive, not attentive; irregular, not regular. Mis signifies ill, or wrong; as, mismanage, to manage ill; miscall, to name improperly; misbehaviour, bad behaviour.

Re sometimes means backwards, and sometimes it means again; as, return, to turn, or come back; remind, to bring to mind again; recall, to call again, to call back.

Co or con signifies with or together. Thus, to condole, means to lament with another; to connect, to join together.

Pre signifies before. Thus, prefix, means to place before.

Out signifies excess, excellency or superiority. Thus, to outnumber, to exceed in number; to outshine, to excel in lustre; to outwit, to overcome by stratagem.

Over signifies eminence, or superiority. Thus, to overcome, means to gain the superiority; to overru?, to be superior in authority.

Super signifies upon, over, or above. Thus to superstruct, means to build upon any thing; to superadd, to add over and above.

Inter signifies between. Thes, to intervene, signifies to come between. It also signifies negation; as, to interdict, means to forbid. Fore signifies before, or beforehand. Thus, to foretell, means to tell beforehand.

Trans signifies over, or beyond. Thus, to transport, means to carry over; to transgress, to go beyond.

De signifies a kind of motion from. Thus, to depart, means to retire from.

Counter signifies against. Thus, to countermand, means to order the contrary of what was ordered before.

Up signifies above, upwards or upper with respect to things or places that lie upwards. Thus, to uplift, to raise aloft; upland, higher land.

With signifies against, from or back. Thus, to withstand, means to stand against; to withdraw, to draw back.

Circum signifies about. Thus, circumlocution, means a roundabout way of speaking.

Ante means before. Thus, antedate, means to date beforehand. Anti signifies against. Thus, antidote, means a remedy against poison.

dis-oblige, not to oblige. mis-apply, not to apply. dis-obey, not to obey. mis-behave, not to behave. un-deceive, not to deceive. co-operate, to work together. pre-engage, to engage beforehand. out-number, to exceed in number. over-take, to come up to. re-assure, to assure again. super-add, to add over and above. inter-weave, to weave between. fore-see, to see beforehand.

trans-plant, to plant in a new place. de-compose, to separate from. counter-act, to act against. up-hold, to hold up.

with-stand, to stand against. circum-jacent, lying round about. ante-date, to date before.

anti-monarchy, against monarchy.

OF CAPITAL LETTERS.

Sentences should begin with a capital letter--Also every line in poetry. Proper dames, 201 are the names of persons, places, rivers, countries, mountains, lakes, &c. &c. shouði begin vÀ capital. Also the name of the Supreme Bebg.

Words of the same accentuation, used both as nouns and verbs.

The learner having been exercised merely in spelling the words as arranged in the preeeding part of the book, without attaching any meaning to them, he is here presented with some recapitulatory lessons, in which he may be required to spell the words and recite their meanings. In giving them as tasks, the author recommends that they should always be divided into small portions, and on no occasion be made of such length as to create fatigue, or distress the pupil.
