Pfalm 6. Domine ne in furore.
ARGUMENT as before in page 165.

ORD, rebuke me not in thy fury: nor
chastise me in thy wrath.

me

Have mercy on me, O Lord, because I am infirm; heal me, O Lord, because my bones are difordered,

And my foul is very much troubled; but thou, Lord, how long.

Turn, O Lord, and deliver my foul; fave me for thy mercies fake.

Because there is none in death, that is mindful of thee; and in hell, who fhall confefs to thee?

I have been tired with my groans: I will every night wash my bed: I will water my couch with my tears.

My eye is troubled with fury, I am grown old among all my enemies.

Depart from me all you that work iniquity; because our Lord has heard the voice of my weeping.

Our Lord has heard my fupplication; our Lord has received my prayer.

Let all my enemies blufh, and be very much troubled; let them be turned back, and afhamed very quickly.

Glory be to the Father, &c.

Pfalm 31. Beati quorum remiffæ.

David declares thofe Men to be bappy, whofe fins are forgiven. He invites all by his own example, to have recourse to the mercy of God.

B

LESSED are they whofe iniquities are forgiven, and whofe fins are covered. Bleffed is the man, to whom our Lord has not imputed fin; neither is there deceit in his mouth.

Because I held my peace, my bones are waxed old; whilft I cried all the day.

Because, day and night, thy hand is made heavy upon me; I am converted in my anguifh, whilft the thorn is faftened in me.

I have made my fin known to thee, and my injuftice I have not hid.

I faid, against myself I will confess my injuftice to our Lord: and thou haft forgiven the impiety of my fin.

For this fhall every holy one, pray to thee in a seasonable time.

Certainly in the deluge of many waters, they shall not approach to him.:

Thou art my refuge from the tribulation, which has compaffed me; my joy deliver me from thofe that affault me on every fide..

I will give thee understanding, and inftruct thee in the way that thou shalt go: I will faften my eyes upon thee.

Do not become as the horse and mule, which have no understanding.

In bit and bridle bind fast their jaws, who approach not to thee.

Many are the fcourges of a finner, but mercy fhall encompass him, that hopes in our Lord.

Be joyful in our Lord, and rejoice ye juft, and glory all ye right of heart.

Glory be to the Father, &c.

Pfalm 37. Domine ne in furore.

All agree that this penitential Pfalm was made by David after the two crimes of Adultery and Murder, which be bad committed. It contains the true and just fentiments of a penitent beart.

L

ORD, rebuke me not in thy fury, nor chaftife me in thy wrath.

Because thy arrows are faftened in me, and thy hand has been heavy upon me.

There is no health in my flesh in regard of thy anger, my bones have no peace in regard to my fins.

Because my iniquities are gone over my head; and as a heavy burthen, are become heavy upon me.

My fores are putrified and corrupted, becaufe of my folly.

"I am become miferable, and bowed down, even to extremity: I went forrowful all the day.

Because my loins are filled with illufions, and there is no health in my flesh.

I am afflicted, and humbled very much : I roared out from the anguish of my. heart.

Lord, before thee is all my defire and my groans are not hid from thee.

My heart is troubled, my ftrength has forfaken me, and the light of my eyes is gone from me.

My friends and neighbours have approached and stood against me.

And they that were near me, ftood afar off; and they did violence, who fought my foul.

And, they that fought my hurt, spoke falfities, and studied deceits all the day.

But I, as one deaf, did not hear; and as one dumb, not opening his mouth.

And I became as a man that does not hear, and as not having reprehenfion in his mouth. Because in thee, Lord, have I hoped; thou fhalt hear me, O Lord my God.

For I have faid; left at any time my eneImies rejoice over me; because whilft my feet are moved, they fpeak terrible things of

me.

*

Because I am ready for fcourges, and my grief is always in my fight.

Becaufe: I will declare my iniquity, and I will think of my fin.

But my enemies live, and are ftrengthened over me, and they are multiplied that hate me unjustly.

They that repay evil for good, flandered me, because I followed goodness.

Forfake me not, O Lord, my God, depart not from me.

Incline to my help, O Lord, the God of

my falvation.

Glory be to the Father, &c.

H

Pfalm 50. Mifere mei Deus.

ARGUMENT, as before in page 186.

AVE mercy on me, O God, according to thy great mercy.

And according to the multitude of thy tender mercies blot out my iniquities.

Wash me still more from my iniquity, and cleanse me from fin.

Because I know my iniquity, and my fin is always against me.

To thee only I have finned, and done evil in thy fight, that thou mayeft be juftified in thy words, and overcome when thou art judged.

For behold I was conceived in iniquities; and my mother conceived me in fins.

For behold thou haft loved truth; the uncertain and hidden things of thy wisdom. thou haft made manifeft to me.

Thou shalt fprinkle me with hyfop, and I fhall be cleanfed: thou fhalt wash me, and I fhall be made whiter than fnow.

To my hearing thou fhalt give joy and gladnefs; and the bones that are humbled Thall rejoice.

Turn away thy face from my fins, and blot out all my iniquities.
