"What mean ye by this Service ?"

"We commemorate His holy Passion, His Resurrection from the dead, His Ascension into heaven, His Session at Thy right hand, O Father: His second most glorious and terrible Advent from heaven. And we offer to Thee these gifts of Thy goodness, in behalf of all, and for all: moreover, we offer unto Thee this reasonable and unbloody Sacrifice." (Liturgy of St. Chrysostom.)

The Divine Service.

When you go into Church say: LORD, I will come into Thine house, even upon the multitude of Thy mercy, and will worship Thee in Thy holy temple, and praise Thy Name. I will go into Thine house with burnt offerings: and will pay Thee my vows, which I promised with my lips. In the Name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost. Amen.

¶ When you take holy water,

say:

Thou shalt purge me with hyssop, and I shall be clean: Thou shalt wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow.

Preparatory Prayer. Come, Holy Ghost, fill the hearts of Thy faithful, and kindle in them the fire of Thy love, Who by a diversity of tongues didst gather all

the nations of the world together in the unity of the faith.

V. Send forth Thy Spirit, and they shall be made.

B. And Thou shalt renew the face of the earth.

Let us pray. God, Who didst teach the hearts of Thy faithful people, by the sending to them the light of Thy Holy Spirit :

In memory of the passion and death of the same Christ our Lord, for which end He commanded that this Sacrifice should be continued. 3. In thanksgiving for all Thy benefits bestowed upon me (especially here add any particular mercies, gifts, or graces, or your communion for which you desire to thank God). 4. In satisfaction for all my sins and faults, the punishments that are my due, which, O Lord Jesus Christ, I pray may be washed away in Thy most holy Blood in this Sacrifice. 5. To obtain Thy

...

grace and help in this my need. (here add what graces you seek). 6. For my parents, friends, and benefactors... (especially . . ). 7. For the rest and peace of the faithful departed (here name those for whom you desire to pray). Let this my intention be pleasing to Thee, O Lord God, and hear me, for the sake of Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

When the priest has come before the Altar, he signs himself with the Cross, and says:

IN the Name of the Father,

and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost. Amen. ¶Then with joined hands, he says with the minister: Antiphon. I will go unto

the altar of God.

R7. Even unto the God of my joy and gladness.

PSALM xliii. Judica me.

Give sentence with me, O God, and defend my cause against the ungodly people : O deliver me from the deceitful and wicked man.

Ry. For Thou art the God of my strength; why hast Thou put me from Thee : and why go I so heavily, while the enemy oppresseth me?

O send out Thy light and Thy truth, that they may lead me and bring me unto Thy holy hill, and to Thy dwelling.

Ry. And that I may go

unto the altar of God, even unto the God of my joy and gladness and upon the harp will I give thanks unto Thee, O God, my God.

Why art thou so heavy, O my soul and why art thou so disquieted within me ?

:

R. O put thy trust in God; for I will yet give Him thanks: Which is the help of my countenance, and my God.

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son and to the Holy Ghost.

R. As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be: world without end. Amen.

V. I will go unto the altar of God.

Ry. Even unto the God of my joy and gladness. ¶ Then he signs himself and
