Thee, we may glorify Thy holy Name, and finally, by Thy mercy, obtain everlasting life.

Grant us, Lord, we beseech Thee, the grace to quench the flames of our

Sunday.

PREPARATION.

1. Direct your intention. O most high and most mighty God! I, an unworthy sinner, desire to worship at these holy Mysteries, and to receive the same, of the Body and Blood of Thy Son, to the praise and glory of Thy divine Majesty; in memory of the most holy life, passion, and death of Jesus Christ, my Saviour; in thanksgiving for all Thy gifts and benefits bestowed on me, a most unworthy sinner, and upon Thy whole Church; in satisfaction for my numberless sins, for my salvation and that of (add the names of those whom you desire to bring before God); for the consolation of the departed (especially ). Truly in Thee alone, O Lord, is all that can

satisfy the desire of my heart. Whom have I in heaven but Thee, and there is none upon earth that I desire in comparison of Thee. Thou Thyself wilt be my exceeding great reward.

2. Make an act of contrition. But with the Sacrifice and Sacrament of the Body and Blood of Thy Son, my Saviour, I humbly offer to Thee, my Lord, the sacrifice of a troubled spirit, a broken and contrite heart. I grieve from my inmost heart, that I have ever offended Thee, my God, my chiefest Good, Who art so gracious to me, and so often dost refresh me in this Sacrament, by my sin, especially ( ) which Thou knowest, O Searcher of hearts, and which I, a miserable sinner, confess with grief, in the bitterness of my soul. Would that I had

never offended Thee! But a broken and contrite heart, O God, Thou wilt not despise, since Thou, for love of us, hast given Thine Only-begotten Son to wash us from our sins in His own Blood.

trust that when Thou comest under my roof, and dwellest in me with the fulness of Thy Divinity, I shall be healed of my sickness? I will arise therefore and go to my Father, my physician, and my refuge: hoping that this Communion may be to me the increase of faith, hope, and love; the firm defence against the snares of my enemies; the putting to flight of evil thoughts; the rooting out of this defect and fault of ); the bringing to good effect of works well pleasing to Thee, and especially the obtaining the virtue of (.. ); and a pledge of future glory. This is the hope which I have laid up in my heart; for Thou art pitiful and of tender mercy, and most faithful in all Thy promises.

3. Make an act of faith. Of a truth I firmly believe, O good Jesu, and with lively faith confess, that Thou Thyself, equal to God the Father in glory and power, true God and true Man, art verily and indeed present in this Sacrament. For Thou, Who art. the Truth, hast said: This is My Body, This is My Blood. I believe whatsoever the Son of God hath spoken; nothing can be truer than the word of Him Who is the Truth. Lord, I believe, help Thou mine unbelief, increase my faith.

4. Make an act of hope. O Christ Jesus, I am sinful dust and ashes, but Thou art the Father of mercies, and the God of all comfort; and Thou callest to Thee all them that labour and are heavy laden, that Thou mayest refresh them. Art not Thou my refuge? To whom else should I go? Thou alone hast the words of eternal life: Thou only comfortest me in all my trouble. I am indeed weak and sick, but Thou art my health they that are whole need not a physician, but they that are sick. If the shadow of Peter passing by healed the sick, should I not

5. Make an act of love. O most sweet Saviour, Jesus Christ, how great was Thy love which drew Thee from the bosom of the Father to this valley of tears, to take human flesh; to endure infinite miseries, injuries, even the death of the Cross; and that only for us sinful men, and for our salvation-O how great was Thy love! Thou mightest have condemned us, and Thou didst choose to save us! We were guilty, and Thou, the innocent One, didst endure our punishment, to set us free! From love it was that Thou camest down to take our flesh, and when

about to depart from this world to the Father, Thou didst leave us this Sacrament, as a pledge of love; that after a wholly new and wondeul manner Thou mightest abie with us for ever, Thou Whose delights are to be with the ons of men. O Lord, how worthy Thou art of love, Who dost so much for love of us! Therefore I will love Thee, O Lord, my strength, my refuge, and my deliverer. O God Thou art love! he that abideth in love, abideth in Thee. I desire to receive Thee in this Sacrament, that I may be more firmly joined to Thee in the bond of love. Who shall separate me from the love of Christ, my Saviour? O that neither life, nor death, nor future lot, nor any other creature may be able to separate me from Thy love!

6. Make an act of humility. But how shall I dare to approach Thee? Art not Thou, O God, my Lord, my Creator, my Redeemer, the King of heaven and earth? And what am I? A poor worm of earth, dust and ashes, and, what is more unworthy still, so often a disobedient and ungrateful sinner against Thee. Of a truth, Lord, I am not worthy that Thou shouldest enter under my roof: yet remember, O Lord, that although Thou wast Lord of all, Thou didst take upon Thee the form of a servant, and come

to us, and converse familiarly with publicans and sinners; and lastly didst humble Thyself even to the death of the Cross. Let that humility of Thine move Thee, I beseech Thee, not to despise me, worthless and humble as I am, but do Thou graciously come to me, and receive me with Thy favour and goodness when I come unto Thee.

7. Ask for grace. O eternal Father, by the merits of Thy Son, grant me grace worthily (if a priest, to celebrate the Sacrifice, and) to receive, not only the Sacrament, but also the substance and virtue of the Sacrament. I offer to Thee the humility and holiness of the ever blessed Virgin Mary, the fervour and devotion, the prayers and good deeds of Thy Saints, to fill up that which is lacking in me.

O Lord Jesus, be merciful to me a sinner; and grant that I may so worthily be a partaker of the mysteries of Thy Body and Blood that I may obtain thence abundant fruit, and strength against all the assaults of the world, the flesh, and the devil; that I may flee from all vices, and especially (....); that I may diligently practice those virtues which are specially necessary for my state of life, love, purity, humility, &c., and study to serve Thee day by day more faithfully.

O God, the Holy Ghost, let Thy power be with me, that,
