Palm Sunday.

¶ After sprinkling of holy water, this Lesson is read with its title at the Altarstep, on the south side, over the flowers and branches, by an Acolyte in alb. LESSON. Exod. xv.27-xvi. 1.

IN those days the children

of Israel came to Elim, where were twelve wells of water, and threescore and ten palm trees: and they encamped there by the waters. And they took their journey from Elim, and all the congregation of the children of Israel came unto the wilderness of Sin, which is between Elim and Sinai, on the fifteenth day of the second month after their departing out of the land of Egypt. And the whole congregation of the children of Israel mur

mured against Moses and Aaron in the wilderness: and the children of Israel said unto them: Would to God we had died by the hand of the Lord in the land of Egypt, when we sat by the flesh pots, and when we did eat bread to the full; for ye have brought us forth into this wilderness, to kill this whole assembly with hunger. Then said the Lord unto Moses: Behold, I will rain bread from heaven for you; and the people shall go out and gather a certain rate every day, that I may prove them, whether they will walk in My law or no. And it shall come to pass, that on the sixth day they shall that which they prepare bring in ; and it shall be twice as much as they gather daily. And Moses and Aaron said unto all the children of Israel: At even, then ye shall know that the Lord hath brought you out from the land of Egypt: and in the morning, then ye shall see the glory of the Lord; for that He heareth your murmurings against the Lord: and what are we that ye murmur against us? And Moses said: This shall be when the Lord shall give you in the evening flesh to eat, and in the morning bread to the full; for that the Lord heareth your murmurings which ye murmur against Him: and what are we ? your murmurings are not against us, but against the Lord. And Moses spake

unto Aaron : Say unto all the congregation of the children of Israel: Come near before the Lord; for He hath heard your murmurings. And it came to pass, as Aaron spake unto the whole congregation of the children of Israel, that they looked toward the wilderness, and behold the glory of the Lord appeared in the cloud.

This Gospel follows, and is read by a deacon, turning to the east, where the Gospel is wont to be read, after the blessing has been received, page 59, with The Lord be with you, and Glory, &c., as usual. GOSPEL. St. John xii. 12.

MUCH people that were come to the feast, when they heard that Jesus was coming to Jerusalem, took branches of palm trees, and went forth to meet Him, and cried: Hosanna, blessed is the King of Israel that cometh in the Name of the Lord. And Jesus, when He had found a young ass, sat thereon; as it is written : Fear not, daughter of Sion: behold, thy King cometh, sitting on an ass's colt. These things understood not His disciples at the first but when Jesus was glorified, then remembered they that these things were written of Him, and that they had done these things unto Him. The people therefore that was with Him when He

called Lazarus out of his

grave, and raised him from the dead, bare record. For this cause the people also met Him, for that they heard that He had done this miracle. The Pharisees therefore said among themselves: Perceive ye how ye prevail nothing? behold, the world is gone after Him.

¶ The Gospel ended, the blessing of the palms follows by a priest in cope, on the third step of the Altar, turning to the south; palms and flowers having been previously placed upon the Altar for the clergy, and for others, on the step of the Altar at the south side.

Here the priest sprinkles with holy water, and censes the branches. Then he says: V. The Lord be with you. B. And with thy spirit.

This done, the palms are distributed: the first of the clergy gives a palm to the officiating priest, who then gives one to him, and to the rest of the clergy; and afterwards to the people, who receive the palm kneeling. In the meanwhile these Anthems are sung.

THE PROCESSION. The ministers are vested in girded albs and amices only, the priest in a cope, preceded by an unveiled cross and candles: the deacon says: . Let us go forward in peace. The choir answers: B. In the Name of Christ. Amen. The Procession is then made round the Church, the people following, all carrying their palms: during its progress, the following is sung:

* The ceremonies used at the procession upon this day were, according to the Sarum Rite, most solemn and elaborate; it seemed the more practical course to give, in this book, so much of the ceremonies and rubrics as could be actually carried out at the present day. In what is here given nothing has been altered, but large omissions have been made.
