EPISTLE. St. James v. 7. BE patient, therefore, brethren, unto the coming of the Lord. Behold, the husbandman waiteth for the precious fruit of the earth, and hath long patience for it, until he receive the early and latter rain. Be ye also patient; stablish your hearts: for the coming of the Lord draweth nigh. Grudge not one against another, brethren, lest ye be condemned: behold, the Judge standeth before the door. Take, my brethren, the prophets, who have spoken in the Name of the Lord, for an example of suffering affliction, and of patience.

GOSPEL. St. Mark i. I.

LESSON. Isaiah li. I. THUS saith the Lord:

Hearken to Me, ye that follow after righteousness, ye that seek the Lord: look unto the rock whence ye are hewn, and to the hole of the pit whence ye are digged. Look unto Abraham your father, and unto Sarah that bare you: for I called him alone, and blessed him, and increased him. For the Lord shall comfort Sion: He will comfort all her waste places; and He will make her wilderness like Eden, and her desert like the garden of the

Lord; joy and gladness shall be found therein, thanksgiving, and the voice of melody. Hearken unto Me, My people; and give ear unto Me, O My nation for a law shall proceed from Me, and I will make My judgment to rest for a light of the people. My righteousness is near; My salvation is gone forth, and Mine arms shall judge the people; the isles shall wait upon Me, and on Mine arm shall they trust. Lift up your eyes to the heavens, and look upon the earth beneath : for the heavens shall vanish away like smoke, and the earth shall wax old like a garment, and they that dwell therein shall die in like manner: but My salvation shall be for ever, and My righteousness shall not be abolished. Hearken unto Me, ye that know righteousness, the people in whose heart is My law; fear ye not the reproach of men, neither be ye afraid of their revilings. For the moth shall eat them up like a garment, and the worm shall eat them like wool:

but My righteousness shall be for ever, and My salvation from generation to genera

GOSPEL. St. Matthew iii. I.

IN those days came John the Baptist, preaching in the wilderness of Judæa, and saying: Repent ye; for the kingdom of heaven is at hand. For this is he that

was spoken of by the prophet Esaias, saying: The voice of one crying in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the Lord, make His paths straight. And the same John had his raiment of camel's hair, and a leathern girdle about his loins: and his meat was locusts and wild honey. Then went out to him Jerusalem, and all Judæa, and all the region round about Jordan, and were baptized of him in Jordan, confessing their sins.

COLLECT.

BLESSED Lord, Who

hast caused all holy Scriptures to be written for our learning: grant that we may in such wise hear them, read, mark, learn, and inwardly digest them, that by patience and comfort of Thy holy Word, we may embrace, and ever hold fast the blessed hope of everlasting life, which Thou hast given us in our

Saviour Jesus Christ. Who | tiles, and sing unto Thy

liveth.

Or this: Stir up, we beseech Thee, O Lord, our hearts to make ready a way for Thine Onlybegotten Son: that by His coming we may be made worthy to serve Thee with pure and clean hearts. Through the same.

The second Collect may be the Collect of the Annunciation, the third, of the First Sunday in Advent; or choose from the Collects of the preceding Sunday. EPISTLE. Romans xv. 4.

WHATSOEVER things

were written aforetime, were written for our learning; that we through patience, and comfort of the Scriptures, might have hope. Now the God of patience and consolation grant you to be like minded one towards another, according to Christ Jesus: that ye may with one mind, and one mouth, glorify God, even the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. Wherefore receive ye one another, as Christ also received us, to the glory of God. Now I say, that Jesus Christ was a minister of the circumcision for the truth of God, to confirm the promises made unto the fathers: And that the Gentiles might glorify God for His mercy; as it is written, For this cause I will confess to Thee among the Gen

Name. And again he saith: Rejoice, ye Gentiles, with His people. And again: Praise the Lord, all ye Gentiles, and laud Him, all ye people. And again: Esaías saith, There shall be a root of Jesse, and He that shall rise to reign over the Gentiles,

in Him shall the Gentiles trust. Now the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, that ye may abound in hope, through the power of the Holy Ghost.

GRADUAL. Out of Sion hath God appeared in perfect beauty: our God shall come manifestly.. Gather My

Saints together unto Me,

those that have made a covenant with Me with sacrifice. Ps. 1. 2, 5.

Alleluia, alleluia. V. The powers of heaven shall be shaken: and then shall

they see the Son of Man coming in a cloud with power and great glory. Alleluia. St. Luke xxi. 26, 27.

GOSPEL. St. Luke xxi. 25. AND there shall be signs

in the sun, and in the moon, and in the stars; and upon the earth distress of nations, with perplexity, the sea and the waves roaring; men's hearts failing them for fear, and for looking after those things which are coming on the earth: for the powers of heaven shall be shaken. And then shall they see the Son of Man coming

in a cloud with power and great glory. And when these things begin to come to pass, then look up, and lift up your heads; for your redemption draweth nigh. And He spake to them a parable, Behold the fig-tree, and all the trees; when they now shoot forth, ye see and know of your own selves that summer is now nigh at hand. So likewise ye, when ye see these things come to pass, know ye that the kingdom of God is nigh at hand. Verily I say unto you, This generation shall not pass away, till

all be fulfilled: heaven and earth shall pass away; but My words shall not pass away. The Creed.

OFFERTORY. Wilt Thou not turn again, O God, and quicken us that Thy people may rejoice in Thee shew us Thy mercy, O Lord; and grant us Thy salvation. Ps. lxxxv. 6, 7.

SECRET.

LORD, we beseech Thee, favourably accept the prayers and oblations of Thy humble servants: and because Our own merits suffice not for our help, grant that we may be sucCoured by Thy protection. Through.
