7th. Various are the conjectures with respect to the word which cannot be the original word; see Bishop Newcome, who reads wyn, vermis. The reading I would propose, though different from the rest, is perhaps not less eligible than those which have been offered; as,

Notwithstanding the preterperfect tense is used in the prophetical writings to denote the certainty of a future event, in a translation calculated for the use of common readers I think the future tense should be made use of, though, perhaps, we should read, as in Exod. xviii. 20, 17, with the conversive 1. One MS. reads ' instead of 'nn, and the grammatical construction requires that reading.

11th. Before I had seen my learned friend, Bishop Newcome's, valuable work, Ì had conjectured, that, instead of, we should read w, contractedly, for N, as it appears in that form, Job, xv. 31; and I found this conjecture afterwards strengthened by Liveleius, in Poole's Synopsis. But, the present reading being supported by great authorities, there is no occasion for changing the text: only it might be better to render it, filthiness. See Ezek. xxxvi. 25, where 'no answers

It seems probable, that, in this verse, there is a transposition of the pronoun ", a corruption in the word 78, and a deficiency of the negative ; and that the text should stand thus;

אני אטרף ואין מפרא - אני אשא ואין מציל

"I will tear, and there is no healer; I will take away, and there is no deliverer." See c. vi. 1. And then each line begins with "; and there is a beautiful antithesis in each member of the verse. to be the right reading. See Job, iv. 10; Prov. xxvi. 13.

15th. If we consult the versions, there may be some reason to conclude that they did not all read D. Might not the text originally be ; "I will go and will return unto my place, until they shall be desolate, and seek my face?" See v. 9. It is past a doubt, that, for, we should read, although no MS. authorises it; and this is one certain proof of the corruption of the text. {

C. vi. 1st.

The present division of the fifth and sixth chapters destroys the necessary connection; upon a future revision, therefore, of the translation, they should be considered as one.

66 One MS. reads, with the Syr. ; and in the third day;" which seems preferable. Thirty-six MSS. have 10p, which is more agreeable to the grammatical construction.

3d. -Two MSS. ready and one 7, which seem to be the true readings; we know, and we shall follow on, or pursue, to know, Jehovah." Forty-three MSS. have, which is more regular.'

7th. Archbishop Secker says there is no probable explication of D. Perhaps, therefore, for we might read “my people have dealt treacherously with me," in disobeying my commandments, as Adam had done.

11th. The critics and commentators are greatly divided in respect to the construction and the sense of this verse. See Poole's Synopsis

“O Judah, I will put an end to thee when I shall have completed the captivity of my people;" to wit, in the destruction of the Jewish nation for the rejection of the Messiah?

Should we not render the first word of this verse thus; according to my healing of Israel, the iniquity of Ephraim and the wickedness of Samaria discovered itself;" i. e. their wickedness increased in proportion to the mercy of God? Some word is wanting either before or after 2. The Sept. and Chald. seem to have read

following, receives some בחוץ which answers better to ,בבית but אליו

countenance from the Chald. version; noctu in domibus furantur, "the thief cometh into the house, and a band spoileth in the street."

4th. Bishop Newcome, in his marginal remark, supposes the affix pronoun to be joined to y, which I do not find to be the case,

may perhaps be ישבות but as ; ישבות before אשר and I would supply

written for naw, the being transposed, or for man, the being omitted, the words, with either of these small alterations, will afford this sense; "they are all adulterers, like a furnace heated by the baker, whilst the raiser ceaseth from kneading the dough, until it be leavened." For, that will bear this sense, see Taylor's Concordance. And the prophet hereby intended to shew the raging lust of the Israelites, by comparing it to an oven heated as much as possible. If the metrical division takes place here, should not the verse be divided into two lines, and not four; the one beginning with, the other with ♫a?

is necessary, though he does not notice it.

12th. I must confess myself dissatisfied with all the attempts that have been made to make out the sense of this verse; and yet, perhaps, the following conjectural reading will be thought much too bold; but there may be no harm in proposing it, which is, to read the latter part

rendering the whole in this ;אורידם לאסורים כשחץ לפחים ;of it thus

manner: "when they go, I will spread my net upon them, as upon the fowl of the heaven; I will bring them down into the chains, as the wild beast into the snares;" alluding, probably, in their punishment, to their sin, mentioned c. v. 1. is probably written for as, the preposition being dropped through its similitude to , which is often the case.

15th. Either '' seems to be a corruption of some other word, or some word is wanting to complete the sense. Perhaps it may be ', “and I, although I chastised them, strengthened their arm," &c.

16th. Before I had seen Bishop Newcome, I had concluded that we should read by, according to Lud. Capellus, see Poole's Synopsis, and transpose the negative particle thus; y a," they will not return to me." And this seems to be the true reading.

C. viii. 1st. — As there is a manifest defect of some word to complete the sense, at the beginning of this verse, and, "as an eagle," does not seem to correspond at all with the context, may it not be written for N, "let the trumpet be lifted up to thy mouth against the house of Jehovah, because?" &c.
