3d. The construction of the words at the beginning of this verse, and 2 Reg. xxiv. 20, is rather forced; but, if we might be allowed to transpose the words and read them thus, by, they would give us this "therefore the wrath of Jehovah shall be upon Jerusalem easy sense, and Judah, until he hath sent them from before his face; and Zedehiah rebelled against the king of Babylon," (preparatory to that event).

8th. Thirty-six MSS. have nya, as it is written 2 Reg. c. xxv. 4: so also Syr. and Ch.

10th. What the officers of Nebuchadnezzar do, in 2 Reg. c. xxv. is said by the prophet to be done by himself.

14th. The before 1 is manifestly wanting 2 Reg. c. xxv.

-Two MSS. read 1, as it is found 2 Reg. c. xxv. 11.

16th. — is certainly right, and it should be so read 2 Reg.

c. xxv. 12.

17th.

Three MSS. read ' instead of 'a, and so it should be written in 2 Reg. c. xxv.

19th. There are several words in this verse not to be found in 2 Reg. c. xxv. which, as they relate to gold and silver vessels and instruments, do not appear to be unnecessary..

20th. - One MS. reads nw, and thus it appears 2 Reg. c. xxv.

28th, 29th, 30th. The commentators have endeavoured to reconcile the numbers here given with 2 Reg. c. xxiv. 16, by saying that the former relate only to the tribe of Juda; but the learned collator of the MSS. supposes that these three verses are an interpolation, and supports his opinion with very strong arguments. See Gen. Dissert. sect.

There is a word manifestly deficient after na: the Syr. and, according to that, our version, inserts nnx, which is countenanced by the other versions.

33d. Forty-two MSS. read, with the Keri, ", which is more agreeable to the next verse and other places of Scripture.

34th. Dr Kennicott observes, 1st Dissert. p. 481, that the oldest MS. omits 1 Dy, thereby avoiding the tautology, and according with 2 Kings: but the Sept. and Ar. omit the three last words.

4th. Twenty MSS. have 'na, which is the more usual reading.

7th. The Sept. rendered na by μeromeria, which affords a very good sense, " and mocked at her captivity, deriving the noun from na, captivum ducere. The other versions vary.

9th. — does not seem to accord very well in this place; and, as the first part of the verse alludes probably to Jerusalem's spiritual fornication, might we not read instead of it," and, or when, she shall go down among the people, (i. e. the Chaldæans, to be punished for her iniquity,) there shall be no comforter?" or, perhaps, 1, "when she shall go down as a widow ?" down as a widow ?" See v. 1 and Jeremiah li.

11th. - Sixty MSS. read D, as in the former verse.

12th.

- Forty-two MSS. have, agreeably to the preceding word and other places of Scripture.

14th. Twenty-seven MSS. read

why, which is certainly better. Forty MSS. have ' instead of " in this place, twenty in the beginning of the next verse, and thirty-four in the latter end of it. See c. ii. 7.

17th. It is probable that here, and

Sixty MSS. have 1791, which is the usual reading.

It may be observed, once for all, that several MSS. read instead of ", where the last word occurs in the text; a very strong presumption that it was a wilful corruption.

9th. - Eighty-six MSS. read wa, with the of the usual size, as the alphabetical order manifestly requires. We should certainly read

her king and her princes * ושריה or some such verb, after גלה חרף

he hath put to shame among the nations, or he hath carried away captive."

10th.

Eleven MSS. have nbna, which is preferable.

13th. Ninety MSS. read, with the Keri, 77. In the second line of this verse, according to the metrical division, the Sept. read "5", "who shall save thee and comfort thee;" but, if we retain the verbs in the first person, we might render them thus: "how shall I save thee and comfort thee?

14th. In the first line of this verse there seems to be a deficiency, and in my opinion the word 27 should be supplied; " and their word shall fail." See on in this sense, Esth. c. vi. 10. The more literal translation of the last line in this verse is this; " and they have seen for thee burdens of vanity and banishments."

15th. Fifty MSS. have y, which is more agreeable to the Hiph. conjugation. Ten MSS. read in the last line, as we have it Ps. xlviii. 2.

For the transposing of these two verses, see Gen.

Dissert. of the Collat. of MSS. sect. 23, &c.

16th. — In the order it stands at present, twenty MSS. read "p", which is certainly more grammatical.
