concern our blessed Lord entertained for the whole human race, both rich and poor, induced him to make the observation in question. But a variety of reasons might be assigned why no such observation would ever have occurred to a mere man; and if it had, that he would never have introduced it into any code of theology of his composition.

Lord Bacon observes, that sacred theology, not only as it respects the great mysteries of our religion, but likewise as it respects a great part of the law moral, is of that perfection," whereunto the light of nature can"not aspire." His Lordship remarks, “ Vox "hominem non sonat, Love your enemies; "do good to them that hate you," &c. Neither is it possible to imagine that the following sentences would have ever occurred to or have constituted any part of a theological code composed by so frail, selfish, and sinful a creature as man; and therefore they ought to be considered as so many internal evidences of the divine mission of Jesus Christ. And nothing, it is presumed, will more illustrate the force and strength of this opinion, than a perusal of the Koran of Mahomet, and likwise the Vedas, or Indian Scriptures, according to the description given

of them by Mr. Maurice, in his Indian Antiquities, (mere human compositions,) and comparing the letter and spirit of their doctrines, with the ensuing ones of our blessed Saviour.
