Thou art our bliss, the greatness of whose Name

Fills and supports this universal frame! 2 Diffus'd throughout infinitude of space, Thy Glorious Self, thine own vast Dwell, ing-Place!

Soul of our soul!-whom yet no sense of

our's

Fully discerns, eluding all our pow'rs.

3 Encircling shades attend thine awful throne, That veil thy face, and keep thee still un

known;

Unknown, though dwelling in our inmost

part

Lord of the thoughts, and sov'reign of the heart!

4 O charming truth! a truth that never tires, No God is like the God my soul admires! He at whose word creation stood, ev'n He, Great as he is, stoops down to dwell with me!

ENCOURAGEMENT

IN CONFLICTS.

356.

P. M.

Come, and welcome, to Jesus Christ.

1 COME, ye sinners, poor and wretched, Weak and wounded, sick and sore;

Jesus ready stands to save you,
Full of pity join'd with pow'r:
He is able, he is able, he is able;
He is willing; doubt no more!
2 Ho! ye needy, come, and welcome;
God's free bounty glorify;

True belief, and true repentance,
Ev'ry grace that brings us nigh,
Without money, &c.

Come to Jesus Christ and buy!
3 Let not conscience make you linger,
Nor of fitness fondly dream;
All the fitness he requireth
Is to feel your need of him;
This he gives you, &c.

"Tis the Spirit's rising beam! 4 Come, ye weary, heavy-laden, Bruis'd and mangled by the fall; If you tarry till you're better, You will never come at all,Not the righteous, &c.

Sinners Jesus came to call.

5 Agonizing in the garden-
Lo, your Maker prostrate lies!
On the bloody tree behold him !—
Hear him cry before he dies-
It is finish'd! &c.

Sinner, will not this suffice?

6 Lo! Immanuel now ascended, Pleads the merit of his blood;

Cast your helpless soul upon him,
Let no other trust intrude!
None but Jesus, &c.

Can do helpless sinners good!

Saints and angels, join'd in concert,
Sing the praises of the Lamb:
While the blissful seats of heaven
Sweetly echo with his Name.
Hallelujah! &c.

Glory to the dying Lamb!

FROM Zion, God declares,

His love shall ne'er decline;

S. M.

Then why indulge these doubts and fears,

Believer, why repine?

Thy warfare finish'd stands,

From that illustrious day,

When Jesus hush'd the law's demands,
And bore thy sins away.

"Twas but a moment's space,

A little moment too,

That from thee he conceal'd his face,

And did his anger show.

Now, he thy spirit cheers,

He tells thee all is well

Tho' delug'd with desponding fears,

And floods of earth and hell!

[blocks in formation]

1 HE that hath made his refuge God,
Shall find a most secure abode ;
Shall walk all day beneath his shade,
And there at night shall rest his head.
2 Thrice happy man! thy Maker's care
Shall keep thee from the fowler's snare;
Satan the fowler, who betrays
Unguarded souls a thousand ways.

3 Just as a hen protects her brood
From birds of prey that seek their blood,
Under her feathers,--so the Lord
Makes his own arm his people's guard.
4 If burning beams of noon conspire
To dart a pestilential fire,

God is their life; his wings are spread To shield them with a healthful shade. 5 If vapours with malignant breath Rise thick, and scatter midnight-death, Isr'el is safe the poison'd air

Grows pure, if Isr'el's God be there.

6 What though a thousand at thy side,
At thy right-hand ten thousand died,
Thy God his chosen people saves
Amongst the dead, amidst the graves.
7 So when he sent his angel down
To make his wrath in Isr'el known,
And slew their sons, his careful eye
Pass'd all the doors of Jacob by.

8 But if the fire, or plague, or sword,
Receive commission from the Lord
To strike his saints among the rest,
Their very pains and deaths are blest!
9 The sword, the pestilence, or fire,
Shall but fulfil their best desire ;-
From sins and sorrows set them free,
And bring thy children, Lord, to thee!

359.

1 CHILDREN of the heav'nly King,
As ye journey, sweetly sing;
Sing your Saviour's worthy praise,
Glorious in his works and ways!

2 Ye are trav❜lling home to God,
In the way the fathers trod;
They are happy now, and ye
Soon their happiness shall see!
3 O ye banish'd seed, be glad!

Christ our advocate is made;-
Us to save, our flesh assumes,-
Brother to our souls becomes!

4 Shout, ye little flock, and blest!
You on Jesu's throne shall rest;
There your seat is now prepar'd,-
There your kingdom and reward!

5 Fear not, brethen, joyful stand
On the borders of your land!
