In connection with the above it is interesting to note, as. showing the rapid development of the mining districts of the Province, that five years ago there were employed in the Kootenay Country 13 teachers, at a total cost of $9,750, while for the year just ended there were employed in the same district 76 teachers, at a cost of $50,821.18.

The following table shows the cost of each pupil on enrolment and on average daily attendance during the past ten years:

By amendment to School Act in 1888, City Districts were required to refund one-third of amount of teachers' salaries.

By amendment to School Act in 1891, City Districts were required to refund one-half of amount of teachers' salaries, and meet all other expenses connected with their schools.

By amendment to School Act in 1893, City Districts are required to pay all expenses connected with the maintenance of their schools, and are allowed a per capita grant of $10 on the average actual daily attendance. They are also given the Provincial Revenue Tax.

PUBLIC SCHOOL TEACHERS' EXAMINATION, 1900.

The annual examination of candidates for certificates of qualification to teach in the Public Schools in the Province began on July 3rd, 1900, in the South Park School Building, Victoria; in the High School Building, Vancouver; in the Public School Building, Kamloops; and in the Public School Building, Nelson.

The Examiners appointed to act with the Superintendent of Education were F. H. Eaton, M.A., John H. Kerr, B.A., Edward B. Paul, M.A., and David Wilson, B.A.

The list of successful candidates appeared in the British Columbia Gazette of July 26th, 1900, as follows:FIRST CLASS-GRADE A-CERTIFICATES.
