MAY IT PLEASE YOUR HONOUR:

PART I.

GENERAL REPORT.

ANNUAL REPORT

OF THE

SUPERINTENDENT OF EDUCATION.

1899-1900.

EDUCATION OFFICE,

VICTORIA, B. C., November, 1900.

To the Honourable J. D. Prentice,

Minister of Education.

SIR, I beg to lay before you, for the information of His Honour the LieutenantGovernor, my Annual Report on the Public Schools of British Columbia for the school-year ending June 30th, 1900.

The whole number of pupils enrolled during the year was 21,531, an increase for the year of 2,346. A clearer idea of the meaning of these figures may be obtained, perhaps, if we remark that this is an accession to our school population nearly equal to the present school population of Nanaimo and New Westminster combined. The enrolment at the four High Schools was 553; at the Graded Schools, 13,813; and at the Common Schools, 7,165. The average daily attendance was 13,667.86; average actual daily attendance, 13,438.41. The grand total actual daily attendance made by all the pupils enrolled was 2,696,906, an increase for the year of 349,150.

During the year there were 298 schools in operation, an increase of 18. These schools were constituted as follows:
