NOTE ON THE OLD ENGLISH RUBRICS.

For convenience of comparison the following modern version of the Old English rubrics (see pp. lxviii., 287-294) is set side by side with the corresponding Latin rubrics from the Cambrai Pontifical, as given by Martène. The numerals appended indicate the pages of the present volume where the Old English rubrics are to be found.

The Cambrai Pontifical does not follow quite the same order as the Jumièges MS. here.

2 This appears to be the meaning of "pam mold zepinde": the last word (or last part of the last word) being probably suggested by the Latin vertice and added accordingly, as a sort of etymological gloss, to the word mold.

The two prayers which follow are the same as in the Jumièges MS. After them in the Cambrai Ordo follows a hymn, and then (with the heading Tunc dicat sacerdos) a benediction, broken into single clauses with Amen after each clause. The benediction, except for its form, and for some omissions and slight variations of wording, agrees with those to be said by the priests or the bishop according to the rubric of the Jumièges MS.

3 This rubric does not appear in the Cambrai Ordo. But a rubric closely resembling it appears in another Ordo given by Martène from the Pontifical of Salzburg (Ordo xv. of Martène's series), and also in the fragment of the Winchester book already referred to. (See p. xxxvi. supra, note 3.) The other rubrics of the Salzburg Ordo and of that of the Worcester MS. show no marked resemblance to those of the Jumièges book. The rubric in the Worcester MS., as transcribed by Mr. Warren, runs thus :

His expletis sacerdotes dicant has benedictiones super infirmum, unusquisque suam. Sin autem episcopus adfuerit ipsius officium hoc erit.

NOTE ON The PrefaceS OF A Twelfth CentURY

WINCHESTER MISSAL.

IN the Public Library of Havre is preserved a portion of a Missal apparently written about the year 1120 for use at Winchester.1 The Prefaces of this book have been made known by M. Ch. Fierville, in a paper published by the Société Havraise d'Études diverses. They are 190 in number, 50 belonging to the Temporale, 121 to the Proprium, 14 to the Commune Sanctorum, and the rest to votive masses.

In regard to the Temporale it may be noted that the Havre MS. has only one Rogation-day Preface; that the Prefaces for the Vigil and the Festival of the Ascension have the same positions as in the Leofric Missal, so differing from the order of the Jumièges MS.; and that there is no proper Preface for the Sabbatum in xii lectionibus after Pentecost. The Sundays after Pentecost are numbered from the Festival (not, as in the Jumièges MS., from the Octave): but the Prefaces for the most part agree with those for the corresponding Sundays in the Jumièges book. That which the Jumièges MS. assigns to the 25th Sunday after the Octave appears in the Havre MS. for the Sunday after Pentecost (apparently as an alternative to the Preface de S. Trinitate): that which the Jumièges book employs for the 22nd Sunday after the Octave is assigned in the Havre book to the 25th Sunday after Pentecost: the Prefaces for the 23rd and 24th Sundays after Pentecost in the one book are the same as those for the 23rd and 24th Sundays after the Octave in the other: and the Havre MS. has Prefaces for the 26th and 27th Sundays after Pentecost which are not in the series of the Jumièges book.

Out of the 121 Prefaces of the Proprium Sanctorum extracted by M. Fierville from the Havre MS. 70 have the same position as in the Jumièges book; 21 are for days for which the Jumièges book provides no proper mass; 13 are for days for which the Jumièges book has a mass but provides no proper Preface2; the remaining 17 differ from the corresponding Prefaces of the Jumièges book.

Of these 17 two are the Prefaces for the Vigil and Festival of S. Peter, which have reversed the positions given to them in the Jumièges MS. A

1 The provenance of the MS. is sufficiently clear from the number of Winchester Saints commemorated in the Proprium Sanctorum. There are three Prefaces of S. Judoc, and one of S. Grimbald, a fact which may suggest that the book belonged to the New Minster, or Hyde. The Kalendar is unfortunately lost.

* This number includes a Preface assigned in M. Fierville's paper to the feast of SS. Processus and Martinianus (vi. Non. Jul.): but the Preface appears really to belong to the feast of the Translation of S. Martin, two days later. If so, the number of this class should be diminished, and that of the next class increased to 18.

third is the Preface for the feast of SS. Timotheus and Symphorianus, which does not agree with the Preface of either of the two masses for the day in the Jumièges MS., but follows mutatis mutandis the Preface for S. Hermes in the Jumièges book. The mass of S. Hermes in the Havre MS. has no Preface. Similarly the Preface for the feast of S. Agapitus (xv. Kal. Sept.) in the Jumièges MS. is transferred with a change of name to the mass for the feast of S. Magnus (xiv. Kal. Sept.) in the Havre MS., which has no Preface in the mass of S. Agapitus.

The Prefaces of the Commune Sanctorum in the Havre book differ from those of the Jumièges book in the majority of cases. The series of votive masses were apparently assigned to the same days of the week in the two books. That in the Havre MS. is imperfect, and it is not impossible that it included a mass in memoriam Salvatoris like that on p. 241 infra. But if it contained such a mass it must have been placed differently from that in the Jumièges book. One of the five Prefaces of these votive masses which remain in the Havre MS. differs from that of the corresponding mass in the Jumièges book.

The mass ad suffragia angelorum is placed in the Havre MS. before that pro peccatoribus [? peccatis]: but the headings given by M. Fierville show that the first of the two was assigned to Tuesday, the second to Monday.

It should further be observed that the part of Muratori's text which appears on col. 241-272 should be placed earlier. In the MS. which was the basis of Muratori's text, these sections stand before the table at the beginning of the supplement.
