In most of these masses Leofr. is in exact agreement with Mur. and Gem. The exceptions are that of S. Felix, where Leofr. merely inserts the name of the saint in another mass for the same day, and those of the Vigil of the Assumption and of SS. Protus and Iacintus, where Leofr. adds a Preface. Men. on the other hand agrees completely with Mur. only in 19 masses of this group, ten of its masses being in partial agreement, while two differ altogether. In two masses of the nineteen Men. has additional or alternative prayers which are not in Mur. Gem. or Leofr. It may be remarked that in several of the twelve masses in which Men. differs from Mur. it agrees more closely with the Gelasian S.1

The masses of the second group number 53. They are for the following days:

In these masses Gem. differs from Mur. in most cases by the insertion of a proper Preface, and the majority of the Prefaces which it inserts are found also in Leofr. and Ott. Leofr. has no Preface for the second festival of S. Agnes, for the Octave of SS. Peter and Paul, or for the festivals of S. Nicomede, SS. Abdon and Sennen, S. Eusebius, S. Agapitus, S. Timotheus, S. Sabina, SS. Cornelius and Cyprian, and S. Saturninus. Ott. agrees with Gem. in the Prefaces for SS. Abdon and Sennen, S. Eusebius, SS. Cornelius and Cyprian, but agrees with Leofr. in the other omissions, also omitting a few Prefaces which appear in Leofr. In some cases where all three have a Preface they differ in the selection: thus Gem. and Ott. agree, as against Leofr., in the Prefaces for the feasts of the Exaltation of the Cross, SS. Peter and Paul, and S. Andrew. Gem. stands alone in its Prefaces for the Purification and for S. Felix.3

With regard to the prayers of these masses Gem. Leofr. and Mur. are for the most part in agreement, but Gem. sometimes omits the prayers which in Mur. and Leofr. are appended to the mass, or converts a Super Populum into an Ad Vesperum, or

1 The first of these only differs from Mur. Leofr. in having the Secret which these books assign to the second.

2 The Preface for SS. Abdon and Sennen is supplied in Leofr. by an 11th century hand. See Leofric Missal, p. 205.

3 It is worth noting that although S. Felix is referred to as a Confessor both in the heading of the mass and in the Secret the Preface is one for the festival of a martyr.

the reverse. For the festival of SS. Fabian and Sebastian, where Mur. and Leofr. give the two masses separately, Gem. combines them into one, placing the Collect for S. Sebastian after that for S. Fabian, &c., but having only one Preface, that for S. Sebastian. The mass for S. Gregory's day in Gem. agrees with Leofr. in adding a Preface, but differs from it and agrees with Mur. in retaining what is probably the older form of the Secret.1 There are also some other minor differences; but it may be said generally that in this group of masses the principal variations which Gem. shows from the text of Mur. is to be found in the addition of Prefaces; and that in most cases Leofr. agrees with Gem.

Ménard's Sacramentary contains masses for all the days of this group but its divergences from Mur. are more considerable. It may be observed that Gem. places before the mass of the Purification forms for the Benedictio Cereorum. These do not occur in Leofr. in the same position, or indeed at all in the earliest part of the text of the Leofric Missal: but the same prayers and anthems are provided in that portion of the text. which Mr. Warren distinguishes as C, that is to say, in the part of the Leofric Missal which appears to have been written in England, during the eleventh century. The loss of a leaf in Gem. unfortunately prevents us from knowing whether the agreement extended to the rubric with which Leofr. C ends the section,3

The third group of masses may be divided into two sections. Of these the first consists of 30 masses, in which Gem. agrees wholly or partly with Leofr. A. They are those for the following days:

This is in Mur. and Gem. a prayer for S. Gregory : n Leofr. it is converted into a prayer for benefits by his intercession.

2 Leofric Missal, pp. 203-4.

3 It may be noticed that the Benedictio in Gem. follows immediately after the collect of the mass of S. Brigid: while the Secret and Postcommunion of that mass do not now appear. This would seem to suggest the possibility that the candles were blessed during the mass of the day preceding the Purification, the Secret and Postcommunion being written at the close of the Benedictio, and having thus disappeared from Gem. by the loss of the leaf. Leofr. A has no mass for S. Brigid's day.

The days marked with an asterisk are those for which Ott. provides a Preface,' those marked with an "obelus" are those for which a mass is found in Men.

In these masses Leofr. is for the most part in agreement with Gem. and the same may be said of Men. with regard to the seventeen masses which it contains. Leofr. makes no mention of S. Basilides in its mass of SS. Cyrinus, Nabor, and Nazarius, and includes S. Felix with SS. Simplicius, Faustinus, and Beatrix. Mur. and Men. have a mass of S. Pancratius, but make no mention of SS. Nereus and Achilleus, while the mass differs throughout from that in Gem. and Leofr. The principal differences between Leofr. and Gem. in the structure of the particular masses are the omission in the former of the Preface of S. Vitus, and of the second Collect and Ad Vesperum of the "Nat. S. Benedicti," which appear in Gem. In this mass the Preface also differs. The mass of S. Maurice in Leofr. has a Collect different from that in Gem., and for the Invention of the

1 The Preface for S. Gorgonius appears in Muratori's text with the heading "Natale Sancti Georgii"; but the date shows that this is probably an error: another Preface appears in Ott. for S. George's Day on viii Kal. Mai.

SS. Nereus and Achilleus are recognised in Ott.

Cross Leofr. Men. and Ott. all have a Preface different from

that in Gem.1

The greater number of this group of masses are found, in whole or in part, in the Gelasian books. The letters V.R.S. appended to particular days in the list indicate that there is in the mass for these days a more or less strong resemblance to the mass in the Gelasian books denoted by these symbols. Sometimes the agreement is complete, but more often it is partial, though sufficiently distinct to suggest that Gelasian books have furnished the groundwork of the mass in Leofr. Gem. and Men.

Lastly, we come to those masses which Gem. supplies for days for which Mur. has no mass, and where Leofr. (A) has either no mass or one entirely different from that in Gem. These are 58 in all. The days are the following:

[blocks in formation]

1 Leofr. and Men. also add an alternative Postcommunion in this mass, but the prayers which they employ are not the same. That in Leofr. appears in the Gelasian texts of V, R, SI as a second Collect, and is marked by S2 for use as a Postcommunion. The Collect, Secret, and Postcommunion of Gem. Leofr. and Men. are in all the three Gelasian books, while the Preface of Gem. is in S, but not in V or R. It appears also in Leofr. C.

* Only the Collect of this mass is now to be found in Gem. (See note 3, p. lviii. supra.)

3 Leofr. places the festival of S. Mark on xv. Kal. Iun. The mass agrees with that in Gem. only in the Collect.
