III. The Lord Jesus, in his human nature thus united to the divine, was sanctified and anointed with the Holy Spirit above measure; having in him all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge; in whom it pleased the Father that all fulness should dwell: to the end, that being holy, harmless, undefiled, and full of grace and truth, he might be thoroughly furnished to execute the office of a Mediator and Surety. Which office he took not unto himself, but was thereunto called by his Father"; who put all power and judgment into his hand, and gave him commandment to execute the same.".

IV. This office the Lord Jesus did most willingly undertake *; which that he might discharge, he was made under the

I delight

the law, and did perfectly fulfil it; endured most grievous torments immediately in his soul, and most painful sufferings in his body; was crucified, and died; was buried, and remained under the power of death, yet saw no corruption. On the third day he arose from the dead,

I delight to do thy will, O my God; yea, thy law is within my heart. With Heb. x. 5. Wherefore, when he cometh into the world, he saith, Sacrifice and offering thou wouldest not, but a body hast thou prepared me: Ver. 6. In burnt-offerings and sacrifices for sin thou hast had no pleasure: Ver. 7. Then said I, Lo, I come (in the volume of the book it is written of me) to do thy will, O God. Ver. 8. Above, when he said, Sacrifice, and offering, and burnt-offerings, and offering for sin, thou wouldest not, neither hadst pleasure therein, (which are offered by the law;) Ver. 9. Then said he, Lo, I come to do thy will, O God. He taketh away the first, that he may establish the second. Ver. 10. By the which will we are sanctified, through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all. John x. 18. No man taketh it from me, but I lay it down of myself: I have power to lay it down, and I have power to take it again. This commandment have I received of my Father. Phil, ii. 8. And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the

unto God by him, seeing he ever liv eth to make intercession for them.

i Rom. xiv. 9. For to this end Christ both died, and rose, and revived, that he might be Lord both of the dead and living. Ver. 10. But why dost thou judge thy brother? or why dost thou set at nought thy brother? for we shall all stand before the judgment-seat of Christ. Acts i. 11. Which also said, Ye men of Galilee, why stand ye gazing up into heaven? this same Jesus which is taken up from you into heaven, shall so come in like manner as ye have seen him go into heaven. Acts x. 42. And he commanded us to preach unto the people, and to testify that it is he which was ordained of God to be the Judge of quick and dead. Mat. xiii. 40. As therefore the tares are gathered and burned in the fire; so shall it be in the end of this world. Ver. 41. The Son of man shall send forth his angels, and they shall gather out of his kingdom all things that h Rom. viii. 34. Who is he that offend, and them which do iniquity :, condemneth? It is Christ that died, Ver. 42. And shall cast them inyea rather, that is risen again, to a furnace of fire: there shall who is even at the right hand of be wailing and gnashing of teeth. V. The Lord Jesus, by his perfect obedience and sacrifice of himself, which he through the eternal Spirit once offered up unto God, hath fully satisfied the justice of his Father; and purchased not only reconciliation, but an everlasting inheritance in the kingdom of heaven, for all those whom the Father hath given unto him'.

V. k Rom. v. 19. For as by one man's disobedience many were made sinners: so by the obedience of one shall many be made righteous. Heb. ix. 14. How much more shall the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without spot to God, purge your conscience from dead works to serve the living God? Ver. 16. For where a testament is, there must also of necessity be the death of the testator. Heb. x. 14. For by one offering he hath perfected for ever them that are sanctified. Eph. v. 2. And walk in love, as Christ also hath loved us, and hath given himself for us, an offering and a sacrifice to God for a sweetsmelling savour. Rom. iii. 25. Whom God hath set forth to be a propitiation through faith in his blood, to declare his righteousness for the remission of sins that are past, through the forbearance of God: Ver. 26. To declare, I say, at this time his righteousness: that he might be just, and the justifier of him which believeth in Jesus.

1 Dan. ix. 24. Seventy weeks are determined upon thy people, and upon thy holy city, to finish the transgression, and to make an end of sins, and to make reconciliation for iniquity, and to bring in ever. lasting righteousness, and to seal up the vision and prophecy, and to anoint the most holy. VI. Although

after threescore and two weeks shall Messiah be cut off, but not for himself and the people of the prince that shall come shall destroy the city, and the sanctuary, and the end thereof shall be with a flood, and unto the end of the war desolations are determined. Col. i. 19. For it pleased the Father that in him should all fulness dwell; Ver. 20. And (having made peace through the blood of his cross) by him to reconcile all things unto himself; by him, I say, whether they be things in earth, or things in heaven.


i. 11. In whom also we have obtained an inheritance, being predeatinated according to the purpose of him who worketh all things after the counsel of his own will. Ver. 14. Which is the earnest of our inheritance, until the redemption of the purchased possession, unto the praise of his glory. John xvii. 2. As thou hast given him power over all flesh, that he should give eternal life to as many as thou hast given him. Heb. ix. 12. Neither by the blood of goats and calves, but by his own blood, he entered in once into the holy place, having obtained eternal redemption for us. Ver. 15. And for this cause he is the Mediator of the new testament, that by means of death, for the redemption of the transgressions that were under the first testament, they which are called might receive the promise of eternal inheritance.
