On the COLLECT for Peace.

O God, from whom alone we can expect the bleffings of peace, (Ifaiab xlv. 7.) and who doft exhort thy fervants, in the most serious and pathetic terms, to unity and concord; (Rom. xv. 5.) the knowledge of whom conftitutes the ineffable biifs of the beatific vifion, (John xvii. 3. 1.) and whofe fervice is a state of perfect liberty, as the oppreflion from our adversaries is a state of the most uneafy fervitude: we humbly befeech thee, to defend us, thy fervants, who caft all our cares upon thee, from all the attacks of our temporal and fpiritual adverfaries that we, relying entirely upon thy aid, may be free from all apprehenfions of the power and malice of demons or men, being under the protection of Jefus Chrift, who hath spoiled the powers of darknefs, (Col. ii. 15.) and is endued with power to deliver us from every evil work, unto his heavenly kingdom. (2 Tim. iv. 18.) Amen.

A Prayer for the Kings Majefty.

Lord our heavenly Father, high and mighty, King of kings, Lord of lords, the only Ruler of princes, who doft from thy throne behold all the dwellers upon earth; Moft heartily we beseech thee with thy favour to behold our moft gracious Sovereign Lord King GEORGE, and fo replenish him with the grace of thy Holy Spirit, that he may alway incline to thy will, and walk in thy way: Endue him plenteously with heavenly gifts, grant him in health and wealth long to live, ftrengthen him, that he may vanquish, and overcome all his enemies; and finally after this life, he may attain everlafting joy and felicity, through Jefus Chrift our Lord. Amen.

PARAPHRASE.

On the COLLECT for Grace.

O heavenly Father, whofe paternal tenderness difpofes thee, and whofe infinite power enables thee to affift us; who, over and above the favours already conferred upon us, haft given us a new inftance of thy mercy, in preferving us from the dangers of the past night, and brought us in fafety to this morning, we implore the continuance of thy favour, during this day, that we may be impowered to refift all the temptations which affault us, and be fecured from all the unhappy accidents to which we are expofed, by the frailty of our nature; humbly imploring thee to direct all our actions by thy infinite forefight and wifdom, that whatever we do, may prove agreeable in thy fight, and be approved by thy unerring judgment: thefe bleffings we hope for, on account of the merits of our bleffed Saviour Jefus Chrift. Amen.

Paraphrafe on the Prayer for the King's Majifty.

O Lord, who doft condefcend to permit us to call thee Father, tho' thy abode is in the Heaven of heavens; thou who art King of kings, and Lord of lords, (1 Tim. vi. 15.) whofe providence extends to all the dwellers upon earth, (Luke xii. 7.) but takeft a more particular care of thofe whom thou hatt raised to that great and weighty office of the royal dignity;

PARAPHRASE.

(Eccl.) we earnestly implore of thee, that thou wouldst, in a more particular manner, afford thy protection to George our king, which bleffing we are bound in duty to pray for, tho' our fovereign should be of a fevere and perfecuting temper; but we ought to be more prompt and earnest to implore thy bleffing upon fo good and gracious a fovereign. We intreat thee to impart to him thy Holy Spirit, (Epb. v. 18.) that his heart, being in thy hand, thou mayeft direct him during the whole courfe of his life: endow him with wifdom and intelligence, counsel and might, and all other gifts and graces which are neceffary for him, either as a monarch or a chriftian, grant him a long life, (P. xix,) with conftant health of body and worldly profperity; be thou a faving strength to thy anointed, and enable him to vanquish his foreign enemies by victorious arms, and to quell the rebellious attempts of his adverfaries at home; and finally, that after spending a religious and happy life in this world, he may enjoy eternal blifs in the life to come. And this we beg for the fake of Chrift Jefus our Lord. Amen.

Omnipotent Being, who art the true fource of life, and the inexhauf. tible fountain of goodness, from whence all the bleflings of human life do proceed, we humbly intreat thee, to blefs our gracious queen Charlotte, his royal highness George prince of Wales, and all the royal family, who, by the laws of the land, have a claim to the right of fucceffion in their turns fanctify them with thy Holy Spirit, ( Theff. v. 23.) granting them the riches of thy grace; (Eph. i. 7.) and be pleased to confer upon them thy choiceft bleflings, that they may enjoy as great a portion of felicity as this world can afford, and when thou judgest fit to remove them from this world to the next, let them receive a crown of glory (1 Pet. v. 4.) in the everlasting kingdom of God. A Prayer of St. Chryfoftom.

Almighty God, who has given us grace at this time

with one accord, to make our common fupplications unto thee, and doft promife, that when two or three are gathered together in thy Name, thou wilt grant their requefts; Fulfil now, O Lord, the defires and petitions of thy fervants, as may be most expedient for them; granting us in this world knowledge of thy truth, and in the world to come life everlasting. Amen.

Paraphrafe on the PRAYER for the Clergy and People. Omnipotent and everlafting God, who alone art able to produce thofe marvellous effects upon the fouls of men, which are often difcoverable in the miniftry of the preachers of thy gofpel, thro' the affiftance of thy grace confpiring with their endeavours; we humbly intreat thee, to bestow thy grace, which bringeth falvation, (Tit. ii. 11.) upon all the bishops and paftors of thy church, and likewife upon all the different congregations whole fouls are committed to their care, and that their efforts may be productive of fruits pleafing in thy fight; we beg of thee that thy bleffing, like the continual dropping of a benign dew upon the grafs, (Prov. xix. 12.) may give an increase to what they plant and water, (1 Cor. iii. 56.) ia promulgating the word of God, and difcharging all the other duties of the ministerial office. And this favour we implore for the honour of Jesus Chrift, whofe honour is greatly promoted by the increase of his church and the falvation of fouls. Amen.

Omnipotent Being, to whofe grace and favour we are indebted for this opportunity of addreffing thee, according to the established forms of our religious worship, and who hatt promifed in thy holy golpel, that where two or three are gathered together in thy name, thou art in the midst of them, (Matt, xviii. 20.) and that what th y agree on fhall be done for them in heaven; (ibid. ver. 19 ) depending therefore upon that gracious promife which thou haft made to thy church, we humbly implore thee to grant us all the bleffings which we have prayed for, whether fpiritual or temporal; bat, with regard to the latter, we defire them only in fuch proportion as thou, in thy infinite wisdom, fhall judge expedient: intreating thee however, of thy goodness, to afford us all neceffary knowledge

Paraphrafe on the Bleffing.

My christian brethren, I here conclude this part of the service with the benediction used by St Paul. (2 Cor. xiii. 14.) committing both you and myfelf to the protecting care of the ever-bleffed trinity, befeeching the great God, in whose nature there is both triplicity and unity, that the grace procured for us by our bleffed Lord Jefus Chrift, by the glorious work of the redemption, may abfolve us: that the love of the Father, which we have recovered by the fhedding of his blood, may justify us; and finally, that we may be fanctified by participating of the communion of the Holy Ghoft. Amen.
