PARAPHRASĘ. may make it his chief endeavour to act in such a manner as may tend to the honour and glory of his Almighty Maker : and that we and his fubjects in general, seriously reflecting that thou the Sovereign of the uni. verse haft conferred upon him the authority which he enjoys, may through a religious principle, and not merely for wraths fake, or being afraid of the power, (Rom. xiii. 3.) pay him all due service and respect," and yield a ready obedience to all his commands, when they shall be ip the Lord, (Epb. vi. 1.) and not inconfiftent with any fuperior duty; and may do this for thy fake, who in thy holy word hait inttructed us, (Rom. xii. 2.'. 1. Let the light of you christians shine forth in such {plendour in the eyes of all who behold you, by displaying to them an extraordinary ex. ample of holiness, charity, and all praise-worthy actions, that they may be fo fully convinced of the goodness of your religion, as to be forced to ascribe its original unto God, and to glorify him by their conversion to the Faith.

PA RA P H R AS E. such as holy and charitable actions are, which are not liable to any of these accidents, and which will be of the greatest advantage to you at the last day, when all earthly treasures shall perish and be lost for ever.

3. Let all your proceedings in your intercourse with other men discover as much justice and charity, as we could reasonably with they would thew us; and this is the sum of the whole first table in the Mosaic law, and of what is delivered concerning social duties in all the writings of the prophets.

4. Men mall not be made partakers of eternal glory, only for the believing in Chrift, and calling upon him Lord, Lord, in the language of his disciples; but unless they moreover discharge the duties enjoined them by God, and yield a sincere obedience to his laws, they shall never eater into that happy state.

5. Zaccheus having received full conviction of the excellence of Christ's doctrine, by the report he had of it the firft time he saw his Períon, in in this manner declared his form resolution of obeying his laws; Lord, though other people imagine that they have sufficiently complied with the rule of charity, by setting apart one fifth of their income for alms, be. hold I am ready o give one half of what I am poffefled of to the poor and if I have wronged any one, I do not ay to be convicted before a judge, and to be compelled to make a fourfold reftitution according to the Mo faic law; I make a voluntary offer of it.

6. What soldier goes out to fight who has not his pay appointed him by those in whose cause he exposes his life? What labourer works and coils in a vineyard, and is not allowed to pluck a few of the grapes? What thep. herd looks after a flock or herd of cattle, and is npi allowed to muchas to talte of the milk which they yield?

7 If we have fown unto you spiritual things, is it a great matter if we shall reap your worldly things ? 1 Cor.9. 11.

8. Do ye not know that they who minister about holy things, live of the facrifice and they who wait at the altar, are partakers with the altar ? Even so hach the Lord also ordained, that they who preach the Gospel, should live of the Gospel. Cor. 9. 13, 14.

9. He that soweih litle, shall reap little: and he that foweth plenteously, shall reap flenteously. Let every mati do according as he is difpoled in his heart, not grudgingly, or of neceffity; for God loveth a cheerful giver. 2 Cor. 9.6, 7.

If we, in discharging the ministerial function, have sowo among you the spiritual treasures of the gospel, is it any great matter, if, in reward of our trouble, we reap from you fuch a portion of worldly things, as will duft ferve to procure us food and raiment, and the other necessaries of life i

Do not they who, under the judaical law minister in the killing and offering the facrifices, gain a livelihood thereby? do not they who for that parpofe attend at the altar, retain a portion of the sacrifices for their own ufe? as we read (Deut. xviii. 1.) in like manner our blefied Lord has ordained, that those who are the preachers of his gospel, suuld thereby acquire a comfortable livelihood.

9. If the lower is fparing. he will have but a small crop ; fo those who are sparing in acts of charity shall mcer with a smaller reward : however, in your contributions, give 'as you had before designed to do ; not being prevailed upon by example to give more than yoa can spare, and then Frudging it when it is done ; for God confiders the cheariulaess as one of the most effential parts of charity.

10. Let the perfoo who reaps the benefit of the preaching of the gospel chearfully contribute to the support of him that teacherh ; let no perion, deceive himself with idle excuses, saying, I have little enough for my own use, why shoald I labour to maintain others ; seinember, that thothele excofes may pass with men, God is not to be mocked, but that he will be feady in his determination with regard to charity, that as a man foneth, even fo fall he reap.
