THE ONE HUNDRED AND FOURTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH IN THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, met in the First Presbyterian Church, Portland, Ore., on Thursday, May 19, 1892, at 11 o'clock A.M.

The following letter was read to the Assembly:

PRINCETON, N. J., May 9, 1892.

The Rev. W. H. Roberts, D.D., Stated Clerk:

Owing to illness I shall not be able to be present to open the Assembly. Will you please, in accordance with the rule of the Assembly, arrange with the senior member to preside at the opening. WM. HENRY GREEN, Moderator.

The Stated Clerk thereupon announced that, so far as he had been able to ascertain, the senior member of the General Assembly was the Rev. John G. Riheldaffer, D.D., of the Presbytery of Mankato, who would preside until a new Moderator was chosen. Dr. Riheldaffer then took the Chair, and stated that after consultation with the Committee of Arrangements, he had requested the Stated Clerk, the Rev. Wm. Henry Roberts, D.D., LL.D., to read the sermon prepared for the occasion by the Rev. Dr. Wm. Henry Green, from Isaiah xlv. 15: "Verily Thou art a God that hidest Thyself, O God of Israel, the Saviour."

The sermon having been read, as requested, the Assembly was constituted with prayer.

The Assembly took recess until 3 P.M., and was closed with prayer.

THURSDAY, May 19, 3 o'clock P.M.

The Assembly met, and was opened with prayer.
