in that they received the word with all readiness of mind, and searched the Scriptures daily, whether those things were so`. Rom. x. 17, So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God'. Rom xv. 4, For whatsoever things were written aforetime' were written for our learning`; that we, through patience` and comfort of the Scrip. tures', might have hope. 1 Thes. ii. 13, For this cause also thank we God without ceasing, because, when ye received the word of God which ye heard of us', ye received it not as the word of men', but (as it is in truth) the word of God, which effectually worketh also in you' that believe`. 2 Tim. iii. 15—17, And that from a child' thou hast known the holy Scriptures', which are able to make thee wise unto salvation' through faith which is in Christ Jesus'. All Scripture is given by inspiration of God`, and is profitable for doctrine`, for reproof`, for correction`, for instruction' in righteousness'; that the man of God may be perfect', thoroughly furnished unto all good works. James i. 22, 25, But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only', deceiving your own selves. But whoso looketh into the perfect law of liberty, and continueth therein, he being not a forgetful hearer', but a doer of the word', this man shall be blessed' in his deed. 1 Pet. i. 25, The word of the Lord endureth for ever`. And this is the word which by the gospel is preached unto you'. Rev. xxii. 18, 19, For I testify unto every man that heareth the words of the prophecy of this book', If any man shall add unto these things', God shall add

unto him the plagues that are written in this book: And if any man shall take away from the words of the book of this prophecy', God shall take away his part out of the book of life, and out of the holy city', and from the things which are written in this book'.

VI. OF MAN.

1. Of the state in which God created him.-Gen. i. 27, God created man' in his own image: in the image of God' created he him; male and female' created he them`.

2. Of the Restriction laid on him in that estate.Gen. ii. 15-17, And the Lord God took the man, and put him into the garden of Eden, to dress it', and to keep it; and the Lord God commanded the man', saying, Of every tree of the garden' thou mayest freely eat: But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it, for in the day that thou eatest thereof' thou shalt surely die'.

3. Of the fall from that estate.-Gen. iii. 1-7, Now the serpent was more subtile than any beast of the field' which the Lord God had made'. And he said unto the woman, Yea, hath God said, ye shall not eat of every tree of the garden'? And the woman said unto the serpent, We may eat of the fruit of the trees' of the garden`: But of the fruit of

the tree' which is in the midst of the garden, God hath said, Ye shall not eat of it', neither shall ye touch it', lest ye die`. And the serpent said unto the woman', ye shall not surely die': For God doth know, that in the day ye eat thereof', then your eyes shall be opened; and ye shall be as gods' knowing good and evil. And when the woman saw that the tree was good for food`, and that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree to be desired to make one wise, she took of the fruit thereof, and did eat; and gave also unto her husband with her, and he did eat. And the eyes of them both were opened', and they knew that they were naked`,

4. The consequences of the fall.-Gen. iii. 14-19, And the Lord God said unto the serpent, Because thou hast done this', thou are cursed above all cattle, and above every beast' of the field': upon thy belly shalt thou go', and dust shalt thou eat all the days of thy life. And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed' and her seed: it' shall bruise thy head', and thou shalt bruise' his heel. Unto the woman he said, I will greatly multiply thy sorrow' and thy conception` : in sorrow' thou shalt bring forth children`; and thy desire shall be to thy husband', and he shall rule over thee`. And unto Adam he said, Because thou has hearkened unto the voice of thy wife', and hast eaten of the tree, of which I commanded thee', saying, Thou shalt not eat of it: cursed is the ground' for thy sake'; in sorrow shalt thou eat of it' all the days of thy life':

Thorns also and thistles shall it bring forth to thee'; and thou shalt eat' the herb of the field'. In the sweat of thy face shalt thou eat bread', till thou return unto the ground'; for out of it' wast thou taken`: for dust thou art', and unto dust' shalt thou return'. Ps. xi. 6, Upon the wicked he shall rain snares, fire and brimstone', and an horrible tempest: this shall be the portion of their cup'. Ps. xiv. 2, 3, The Lord looked down from heaven' upon the children` of men, to see if there were any that did understand' and seek God. They are all gone aside, they are all together' become filthy`; there is none that doeth good', no not one`. Rom. ii. 6, 8, 9, God will render to every man' according to his deeds: Unto them that are contentious, and do not obey the truth, but obey unrighteousness', indignation', and wrath`, tribulation and anguish', upon every soul of man that doeth evil. Rom. iii. 9-19, 23, What their? are we better than they'? No, in no wise': for we have before proved both Jews' and Gentiles', that they are all under sin': As it is written, There is none righteous', no, not one': There is none that understandeth', there is none that seeketh after God'. They are all gone out of the way`, they are together become unprofitable`; there is none that doeth good', no, not one'. Their throat is an open sepulchre` : with their tongues' they have used deceit`: the poison of asps' is under their lips`: Whose mouth is full of cursing and bitterness`: Their feet' are swift to shed blood: Destruction and misery' are in their ways: And the way of peace' have they not known`:

There is no fear of God' before their eyes`.

Now

we know, that what things soever the law saith', it saith to them who are under the law`; that every mouth may be stopped', and all the world may become guilty before God': For all have sinned', and come short of the glory of God'. Rom. v. 12, 18, 19, By one man sin entered into the world', and death by sin`; and so death passed upon all men', for that all have sinned: By the offence of one', judgment came upon all men' to condemnation`: By one man's disobedience', many were made sinners`.

VII. MAN CAN DO NOTHING TO SAVE HIMSELF.

Isa. lxiv. 6, We are all as an unclean thing', and all our righteousnesses are as filthy rags`; and we all do fade as a leaf; and our iniquities, like the wind', have taken us away. Hos. xiii. 9, O Israel', thou hast destroyed thyself; but in me' is thine help'. Rom. iii. 20, Therefore by the deeds of the law' there shall no flesh be justified in his sight: for by the law' is the knowledge of sin. Rom. viii. 7, 8. The carnal mind is enmity against God': for it is not subject to the law of God', neither indeed can be': So then, they that are in the flesh' cannot please God.

VIII. OF SALVATION.

1. That there is Salvation from God, and that it is
