Tho' waves and storms go o'er my head,

Tho' strength, and health, and friends be

gone,

Tho' joys be wither'd all, and dead,
And ev'ry comfort be withdrawn,
On this my stedfast soul relies,
Jesus, thy mercy never dies.

Fix'd on this ground will I remain,
Tho' my heart fail, and flesh decay;
This anchor shall my soul sustain
When earth's foundations melt away:
Mercy's full pow'r I then shall prove,
Lov'd with an everlasting love.

565.

GOD is the refuge of his saints,
When storms of sharp distress invade;
Ere we can offer our complaints,
Behold him present with his aid.

Let mountains from their seats be hurl'd
Down to the deep, and buried there;
Convulsions shake the solid world,
Our faith shall never yield to fear.

Loud may the troubled ocean roar,
In sacred peace our souls abide,
While ev'ry nation, ev'ry shore,
Trembles and dreads the swelling tide.

There is a stream whose gentle flow
Supplies the city of our God;
Life, love, and joy, still gliding thro'
And wat ring our divine abode.

That sacred stream, thine holy word,
That all our raging fears controuls:
Sweet peace thy promises afford,
And give new strength to fainting souls.

Sion enjoys her Monarch's love,
Secure against a threat'ning bour,
Nor can her firm foundations move,
Built on his truth, and arm'd with pow'r.

566.

SHINE, mighty God! on Britain shine,
With beams of heav'nly grace;
Reveal thy pow'r thro' all our coasts,
And shew thy smiling face.

Amidst our isle, exalted high,

Do thou, our glory, stand, And, like a wall of guardian fire, Surround thy fav'rite land.

When shall thy name from shore to shore,
Sound all the earth abroad,

And distant nations know, and love,
Their Saviour, and their God?

Sing to the Lord, ye distant lands,
Sing loud, with solemn voice,
While British tongues exalt his praise,
And British hearts rejoice,

He, the great Lord, the sov'reign Judge,
That sits enthron'd above,
Wisely commands the world he made,
In justice and in love.

Earth shall obey her Maker's will,
And yield a full increase;
Our God will crown our chosen isle
With fruitfulness and peace.

God the Redeemer scatters round
His choicest favours here,
While the creation's utmost bound
Shall see, adore, and fear.

567.

THE Lord Jehovah reigns,
And royal state maintains,
His head with awful glories crown'd:
Array'd in robes of light,

Begirt with sov'reign might,

And rays of majesty around.

Upheld by thy commands,
The world securely stands,

And skies and stars obey thy word:
Thy throne was fix'd on high,
Before the starry sky;
Eternal is thy kingdom, Lord.

Let floods and nations rage,
And all their pow'r engage;
Let swelling tides assault the sky;
The terrors of thy frown

Shall beat their madness down,
Thy throue for ever stands on high.

Thy promises are true,

Thy grace is ever new;

There fix'd, thy church shall ne'er remove: Thy saints with holy fear

Shall in thy courts appear, And sing thine everlasting love.

568.

A DAWN of hope my soul revives,
And banishes despair,

If yet for me Immanuel lives

To plead his potent prayer.

Dispel then, Lord, these shades of night,
My sullen doubts remove;

O send a ray of heav'nly light,
And lead me to thy love.

569.

HAIL, thou once despised Jesus,
Hail, thou Galilean King;

Who didst suffer, to release us,
Who didst free salvation bring:
Hail, thou glorious God and Saviour!
Thou hast borne our sin and shame:
Thro' whose merit we find favour,
Life is given thro' thy name.

Jesus, hail! enthron'd in glory,
There for ever to abide;

All the heav'nly hosts adore thee,
Seated at thy Father's side:

There for sinners thou art pleading,
Spare them yet another year!

There for saints art interceding,

Till in glory they appear.

Worship, honour, pow'r, and blessing,

Christ is worthy to receive;

Loudest praises without ceasing

Meet it is for us to give;
Help, ye bright angelic spirits,
Bring your sweet, your noblest lays,
Help to sing our Jesu's merits,
Help to chant Immanuel's praise.
