PREFACE TO THE SECOND EDITION. THE rapid sale of the first Edition may, it is hoped without presumption, be taken as a proof that the Author's labours have been found useful to students, and not without interest to general readers. The thought has encouraged him in the work of revision, which has also been facilitated by many kind suggestions. For these the Author takes this opportunity of thanking the Lord Bishop of Manchester, the Rev. Dr. Jacobson, the Venerable Archdeacon Churton, the Rev. Henry J. Rose, and the Rev. C. A. Swainson. Some new matter, introduced into this edition, is due to the Rev. Philip Freeman, whose work' will rank among our authorities on questions relating to the Ritual of the Western Church, and the true understanding of our own Reformed Service.
