Circumcifion renewed.

Joshua.

14 On that day the LORD magnified Joshua in the fight of all Ifrael, and they feared him, as they feared Mofes, all the days of his life.

15 And the LORD spake unto Joshua, faying,

16 Command the priests that bear the ark of the teftimony, that they come up out of Jordan.

17 Joshua therefore commanded the priests, faying, Come ye up out of Jordan. 18 And it came to país, when the priests that bare the ark of the covenant of the LORD, were come up out of the midft of Jordan, and the foles of the priests feet were lift up unto the dry land, that the waters of Jordan returned unto their place, and flowed over all his banks, as they did before. 19 And the people came up out of Jordan, on the tenth day of the firit month, and encamped in Gilgal, in the east border of Jericho.

20 And thofe twelve ftones which they took out of Jordan, did Joshua pitch in Gilgal.

21 And he fpake unto the children of Ifrael, faying, When your children fhall ask their fathers in time to come, faying, What mean thefe ftones?

22 Then ye shall let your children know, faying, Ifrael came over this Jordan on dry. land.

23 For the LORD your God dried up the waters of Jordan from before you, until ye were paffed over, as the LORD your God did to the Red-fea, which he dried up. from before us, until we were gone over 24 Thatallthe people of the earth might know the hand of the LORD, that it is mighty: that ye might fear the LORD your God for ever.

CHAP. V.

1 The Canaanites are afraid. 2 Circumcifion renewed

Nd it came to pass when all the kings Aof the Amorites, which were on the

ide of Jordan weftward, and all the kings of the Canaanites, which were by the fea, heard that the LORD had dried up the waters of Jordan from before the children of Ifrael, until we were paffed over, that their heart melted; neither was their fpirit in them any more, because of the children of Ifrael.

2 At that time the LORD faid unto Joshua, Make thee fharp knives, and circumcife again the children of Ifrael the fecond time.

3 And Joshua made him fharp knives, and circumcifed the children of Ifrael at the hill of the foreskins.

4 And this is the caufe why Joshua did circumcife: all the people that came out of Egypt, that were males, even all the men of war, died in the wilderness by the way, after they came out of Egypt.

5 Now all the people that came out, were circumcifed; but all the people that were born in the wilderness by the way, as they came forth out of Egypt, them they bad not circumcifed.

Manna ceafetb.

6 For the children of Ifrael walked fourty years in the wilderness, till all the people that were men of war which came out of Egypt were confumed, because they obeyed not the voice of the LORD: unto whom the LORD fware that he would not fhew them the land which the LORD fware unto their fathers that he would give us, a land that floweth with milk and honey.

7 And their children, whom he raifed up in their ftead, them Jofhua circumcifed: for they were uncircumcifed, because they had not circumcifed them by the way.

8 And it came to pafs when they had done circumcifing all the people, that they abode in their places in the camp, till they were whole.

9 And the LORD faid unto Joshua, This day have I rolled away the reproach of Egypt from off you: wherefore the name of the place is called Gilgal unto this day.

To And the children of Ifrael, encamped in Gilgal, and kept the paflover, on the fourteenth day of the month, at even, in the plains of Jericho.

11 And they did eat of the old corn of the land, on the morrow after the paffover unleavened cakes, and parched corn in the felf-fame day.

12 And the manna ceafed or the morrow after they had eaten of the old corn of the land, neither had the children of Ifrael manna any more, but they did eat of the fruit of the land of Canaan that year.

13. And it came to pafs when Jofhua was by Jericho, that he lift up his eyes, and looked, and behold, there ftood a man over against him, with his fword drawn in his hand and Joshua went unto him and faid unto him, Art thou for us, or for our adveriaries?

14 And he faid, Nay, but as Captain of the host of the LORD am I now come. And Joshua fell on his face to the earth, and did worship, and faid unto him, What

faith my LORD unto his fervant?

15 And the Captain of the LORD's hoft faid unto Jofhua, Loofe thy fhoe trom off thy foot, for the place whereon thou ftandeft, is holy: and Joshua did fo.

It Ifrael hath finned, and they have alfo tranfgreffed my covenant which I commanded them for they have even taken of the accurfed thing, & have alfo ftolen, and diffembled alfo, and they have put it even amongst their own ftuff.

12 Therefore the children of Ifrael could not ftand before their enemies, but turned their backs before their enemies, because they were accurfed: neither will I be with you any more, except ye deftroy the accurfed from amongit you.

23 And they took them out of the midft of the tent and brought them unto Joshua, and unto all the children of Ifrael, and laid them out before the LORD.

2 And thou shalt do to Ai and her king, as thou didft to Jericho & her king: only the fpoil thereof, and the cattle thereof fhall ye take for a prey unto your felves: lay thee an ambush for the city, behind it.

3 So Joshua arofe, and all the people of war, to go up againft Ai: and Jofhua chofe out thirty thousand mighty men of valeur, and fent them away by night. 4. And he commanded them, faying, Behold, ye thall lie in wait against the city, even behind the city: go not very far from the city, but be ye all ready:

5 And I, and all the people that are with me, will approach unto the city and it fhall come to pafs when they come out a gainst us, as at the first, that we will flee

See, I have commanded you.

9 Joshua therefore fent them forth: and they wentto lie in ambush, and abode

10 And Joshua rofe up early in the morDing and numbred the people, and went up, he and the elders of Ifrael, before the people to Ai.

11 And all the people, evn the people of war that were with him, went up, and drew nigh, and came before the city, and pitched on the north-fide of Ai: now there was a valley between them and Ai.

12 And he took about five thousand men and fet them to lie in ambush, between Beth-el and Ai, on the weft-fide of city. 13 And when they had fet the people, even all the hoft that was on the north of the city, and their liers in wait on the wett of the city: Joshua went that night into the midst of the valley.

14 And it came to pafs when the king -of Ai faw it, that they hafted and role up early, and the men of the city went out againft Ifrael to battle, he and all his people, at a time appointed, before the plain, but he wift not that there were liers in ambuth against him, behind the city;,

15 And Joshua and all Ifrael made as if they were beaten before them, and fled by the way of the wilderness.

16 And all the people that were in Ai, were called together to purfue after them: and they pursued after Jofhua, and were drawn away from the city.

17 And there was not a man left in Ai, or Beth-el, that went not out after Ifrael and they left the city open, and purfued after Ifrael.

15 And the LORD faid unto Jofhua, Stretch out the fpear that is in thine hand, toward Ai; for I will give it into thine band. And Joshua ftretched out the fpear that be bad in his hand toward the city.

19 And the ambush arofe quickly out of their place, and they ran as foon as he had ftretched out his hand; and they entred into the city, and took it, and haited, and fet the city on fire.

32 And he wrote there upon the ftones a copy of the law of Mofes, which he wrote in the prefence of the children of Ifrael.

33 And all Ifrael, and their elders, and officers, and their judges, ttood on this fide the ark, and on that fide, before the priefts the Levites, which bare the ark of the covenant of the LORD, as well the ftranger, as he that was born among them: half of them over against mount Gerizzim, and half of them over against mount E bal: as Mofes the fervant of the LORD had commanded before, that they thould blefs the people of Ifrael.

34 And afterward he read all the words of the law, the bleffings and curlings, according to all that is written in the book of the law.
