10 In God I make my boast, because of His promise;

In JEHOVAH I make my boast, because of His promise. 11 In God' do I place my confidence ;

I fear not what man can do unto me.

12 The vows which I made unto Thee are upon me;

I will render unto Thee thanksgivings,

13 Because Thou hast delivered me from death.

Assuredly, Thou hast kept my feet from being overthrown, So that I walk before God in the light of the living.

PSALM LVII.

1 BE gracious unto me, O God, be gracious unto me, For with Thee do I take refuge;

Even under the shadow of Thy wings do I take refuge, Until their mischief pass away.

I call upon God, the most High

Upon God, who bringeth all things to a good end for me. 3 HE will send from heaven, and save me;

He will bring to shame him who panteth eagerly after me; God will send forth His loving-kindness and truth.

4 My life is amongst lions,

I lie down to rest amongst men of fiery spirit,

12 upon me i. e. God having complied

with the prayer of the Psalmist, he here acknowledges his obligations, in return for the mercies thus vouchsafed unto him.

13 Assuredly Thou hast &c.- Heb. Hast Thou not &c.?

PSALM LVII.

1 their mischief-Heb. the mischief (now directed against me by my enemies).

3 panteth eagerly- See Ps. Lvi. 1. Note. 4 lions-i. e. men of ferocious disposition. men of fiery spirit - Heb. flaming sons of men.

Whose teeth are spears and arrows,

And whose tongue is a sharp sword.

5 Be thou exalted above the heavens, O GodTHY glory over all the earth!

6 They prepared a net for my feet,

They bowed me down,

They digged a pit before me;
They are fallen into it!

7 O God, my heart is prepared—

My heart is prepared, I will sing and I will hymn. 8 Awake my soul! awake, O lute and harp!

I will awake with the early dawn.

9 I will praise Thee, O Lord, among the nations,

I will hymn Thee among the people;

10 For great, even unto the heavens, is Thy loving-kindness, And Thy faithfulness unto the clouds.

11 Be Thou exalted above the heavens, O God, THY glory over all the earth!

PSALM LVIII.

ye truly pronounce righteous judgment, ye mighty ones, Do ye give sentence with rectitude, ye sons of men?

2 Nay, but ye contrive wickedness in your hearts,

Ye dispense the violence of your hands through the land.

3 The wicked go astray, even from the womb;

They err, even from their birth, speaking lies. 4 Their venom is like the venom of a serpent—

Like that of the deaf adder, which stoppeth its ears5 Which listeneth not to the voice of the charmers—

Of those most skilled in enchantments.

6 Beat out the teeth in their mouths, O God, Break the fangs of the lions, O JEHOVAH.

7 Let them melt and become like water,

Let them pass away;

When they bend their bow,

Let their arrows be as though they were pointless. 8 Like the snail which melteth, let them pass away

Like the untimely birth of a woman, which seeth not the sun. 9 Before your pots feel the fire,

May a tempest scatter the thorns, the green and the dry!

10 The righteous man shall rejoice when he seeth the vengeance; He shall wash his feet in the blood of the wicked.

11 And men shall say:

"Doubtless there is a reward for the righteous man, "Doubtless there is a God who executeth judgment in the earth."

3 from the womb-i. e. from the very earliest period of their lives.

They err-i. e. from the paths of recti-
tude.

- from their birth - Heb. from the belly
(of their mother).
4 deaf adder. -a serpent, differing from
serpents in general, which, like other
creatures, may be charmed and tamed;
and, on this account, an apt similitude
for a tongue submitting to no control.
"For every kind of beasts, and of birds,
and of serpents, and things in the sea,
is tamed, and hath been tamed of man-
kind: but the tongue can no man tame;
it is an unruly evil, full of deadly poison."
James iii. 7, 8.

PSALM LIX.

1 DELIVER me from mine enemies, O my God,.

Defend me from those who set themselves up against me. 2 Deliver me from the workers of iniquity,

And save me from blood-thirsty men.

3 For behold! they lie in wait for my life;

Mighty men gather themselves together against me, Without offence and without fault on my part, O JEHOVAH. 4 Without any iniquity of mine,

They run and make themselves ready.

Arouse Thyself and come to meet me, and behold!

5 Yea, do Thou, O JEHOVAH-GOD,

God of hosts, the God of Israel,

Awake to punish all the nations;

Show compassion to none of the wickedly treacherous.

6 Every evening do they return, They growl like dogs,

And they go about the city.

7 Behold! they pour forth evil with their mouths, Swords are within their lips,

For (they say): "Who heareth ?”

8 But Thou, JEHOVAH, shalt laugh at them,
THOU shalt hold all the nations in derision.
9 O my Strength, unto Thee will I hymn,
For God is my lofty tower of refuge-
10 A God of loving-kindness to me.

[blocks in formation]

GOD will place Himself before me,

HE shall cause me to see the fall of those who watch my steps.

Slay them not in battle, lest my people forget;
Make them wanderers through Thy might,

And bring them down, O Lord, our Shield.

12 For the sin of their mouth-for the words of their lips,

Let them, in their pride, be taken captive;

Even because of the curses and falsehood which they utter. 13 Consume them in Thy wrath,

Consume them that they be no more;

So that men may know that God ruleth over Jacob,
Even unto the ends of the earth.

14 For every evening do they return,
They growl like dogs,

And they go about the city.

15 Let them wander about for food;

If they be not filled, then let them murmur.

16 As for me, I will sing of Thy strength,

Yea I will sing aloud of Thy loving-kindness every morning, Because Thou hast been a lofty tower of refuge for meEven a place to flee unto, in the day of my distress.

17 O my Strength, unto Thee will I hymn,

For God is my lofty tower of refuge

A God of loving-kindness to me.
