I. ON THE FUTURE STATE. WHITHER am I going? My earthly life is drawing to its close. I am a stranger and a sojourner on earth, as all my fathers were, and my dust will soon mingle with theirs. Whither am I going? Eternal life is before me, or I am about to undergo the sentence of eternal death. Within a short time I shall be raised to angelic glory, or degraded to the doom of devils. The alternative is awful. On the one hand, if I am a child of God, I shall hear the Redeemer say, Well done, good B and faithful servant: enter thou into the joy of thy Lord. Come, thou blessed of my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for thee from the foundation of the world. I shall have a crown of life; I shall go to life eternal; and be for ever with the Lord, where there is fulness of joy and pleasure for evermore. Or, on the other hand, if I should still be under the wrath of God, or an unpardoned and unregenerate sinner, I must experience the fulfilment of the following most awful declarations of Scripture →→→→ He will render to every man according to his deeds.
