Or else,

To the greater glory of thy name, O God, I approach this work, and offer it to thee in union with the infinite merits of Jesus Christ.

In the midst of your work often elevate your mind to God.
While the hour is striking say:

Hail Mary, &c.

Or,

May the Almighty grant to us mortals a propitious hour.

Evening.

In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost.

Come, Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of thy faithful, and kindle in them the fire of thy love.

V. Send forth thy spirit, and they shall be created.

Ry. And thou shalt renew the face of the earth.

O God, who hast taught, &c. (as in the Morning).

Make an Examination of Conscience (a Pause).

Let a lively grief be excited for sins committed, and let it be *followed by Acts of Faith, Hope, Charity, and Contrition.

Pray for the Faithful Departed.

Out of the depths have I cried, &c. p. 136.

V. Eternal rest give to them, O Lord. R. And let perpetual light shine upon them.

. From the gates of Hades. R. Deliver their souls, O Lord. . May they rest in peace. R. Amen.

O God, the Creator and Redeemer, &c.

Angel of God, who art my guardian, guard, direct, and govern me, who have been committed to thee by the supernal clemency. Amen.

St. Michael, Archangel, defend us from our enemies.

St. Joseph, our Patron Saints NN, and all ye Saints of God, intercede for us.

Save us, O Lord, when we are awake, and keep us while we sleep, that we may watch with Christ, and rest in peace. Amen. Let a spiritual reading follow, and let the matter be prepared for the morning meditation; after which, one of the four Antiphons of the Blessed Virgin Mary may be recited, concluding all with the sign of the Cross.

While getting into bed, take some holy water, and say:

In the name of our Lord Jesus Christ crucified, I lay me down to rest, may he bless, govern, and protect me, and bring me to life eternal. Amen.

Lying down now in your bed, say:

Into thy hands, O Lord, I commend my spirit; thou hast redeemed me, O Lord God of Truth.

COMMENDATION OF ONESELF TO JESUS.

O most amiable Jesus, I commend myself into thy hands this day and ever, as thou, when dying on the Cross, didst commend thyself into the hands of the Father, and as thy most blessed Mother commended herself to thee. Make me to live according to thy will, and to die in thee, and I pray thee to grant the same to all, as well my enemies as my friends, and specially NN, through the merits of thy passion and death, and through the intercession also of thy most sweet Mother and of all the Saints.

Bless me, O loving Jesus, with the Father and the Holy Spirit, and lead me into life everlasting. Amen.

COMMENDATION TO THE BLESSED VIRGIN.

O my lady, holy Mary, to thy blessed keeping, and to the bosom of thy tender compassion, I commend my soul and body this day, every day, and at the hour of my departure; all my hopes, my consolation, my anxieties and miseries, my life, and the end of my life, I commit to thy keeping, that, by thy most holy intercession and merits, all my doings may be guided and disposed according to thy will and that of thy Son. Amen.

O God, who madest the sons of Israel to walk with dry feet through the midst of the sea, and who didst open to the three magi, by the guiding of a star, the way that led to thee; grant to us, we beseech thee, a prosperous journey, and a time of tranquillity, that, attended by thy holy angel, we may happily arrive at that place whither we are journeying, and finally at the haven of eternal salvation.

O God, who broughtest Abraham thy son out of the land of the Chaldees, and didst preserve him unhurt through all his journeyings, we beseech thee, vouchsafe to keep us thy servants; be unto us our support in our setting out, our solace on the way, our shadow in the heat, our covering in the rain and cold, the chariot of our weariness, the fortress of our adversity, our staff in the ways of slipperiness, and our harbour in shipwreck, that under thy guidance, we may reach in prosperity the object of our journey, and at length return to our home in safety.

Give ear, O Lord, we beseech thee, to our supplications, and dispose the way of thy servants in the blessedness of thy salvation, that amidst all the various changes of this our life and pilgrimage, we may ever be protected by thy help.

Vouchsafe to thy people, we beseech thee, Almighty God, that they may walk onward in the way of salvation, and by following the exhortations of the blessed Forerunner John, may come safe to the presence of him whom he preached, Jesus Christ thy Son our Lord, who liveth and reigneth with thee, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God for ever and ever. Amen.

V. Let us proceed in peace.

Ry. In the name of the Lord. Amen.
