Grant me humility, purity, patience, and all the virtues; extirpate every vice from my heart. Change this heart, so filled with the world, and give me a new heart altogether conformable to thy will, that I may always seek after thy greater glory, and that my affections may tend to thy love. Thou wilt not deny me any grace now, although I am so unworthy, for I do not pray alone, but Jesus Christ is united with me; and though I deserve not to be heard, yet the merits of Jesus Christ, who prays with me, in me, and for me, thou wilt not refuse to listen to. nal Father, remember the promise of Jesus, when he said, that whoever asked thee any thing in his name should be heard. It is but just, it is only an act of gratitude, O my Jesus, that I should give myself entirely to thee, since thou hast given thyself entirely to me. O God, who, under a wonderful Sacrament, hast left us a memorial of thy passion; grant us, we beseech thee, so to venerate the sacred mysteries of thy body and blood, that we may ever feel within us the fruit of thy redemption. Who livest, &c. Amen. The Devotion of the "Quarant' Ore,” OR FORTY HOURS' PRAYER. This devotion continues for forty hours, in memory of the forty hours during which the body of our Lord remained in the sepulchre. It was begun at Milan in 1534, and was introduced into Rome by St. Philip Neri in 1548, and sanctioned by Pope Clement VIII., who issued a solemn Bull respecting it, November 25th, 1592. • To promote this devotion, Pope Clement XIII. granted a plenary indulgence to all such as, confessing their sins and receiving the holy communion, should visit any church or chapel where this devotion was being performed. To gain this indulgence it is required, (1) to visit the Blessed Sacrament once each day during the three days of exposition; and (2) to receive the holy communion on one of the three days; but not necessarily in the same church or chapel in which the Blessed Sacrament is exposed. Pope Paul V. also granted an indulgence of ten years and ten quadragena for every visit made to the Blessed Sacrament thus exposed. These indulgences are applicable to the souls in purgatory. The forms of prayers used in this devotion are, the Litany of the Saints, Collects, &c., as given p. 303; to which may be added the Litany of the Blessed Virgin, the Miserere psalm, and the Te Deum. Private devotions may be used at discretion from those which follow. Visits ΤΟ THE MOST HOLY SACRAMENT. A Prayer for the Benediction of the Most Holy O divine Redeemer of our souls, who of thy great goodness hast been pleased to leave us thy precious body and blood in the blessed Sacrament of the Altar, I adore thee with the most profound reverence. I humbly thank thee for all the favours thou hast bestowed upon us, especially for the institution of this most holy Sacrament. And as thou art the source of every blessing, I entreat thee to pour down thy benediction this day upon us, and upon all those for whom we offer up our prayers. And that nothing may interrupt the course of thy blessing, I beseech thee to banish from my heart all that displeases thee: pardon me my sins, O my God, since I sincerely detest them for love of thee; purify my heart, sanctify my soul, bestow on me a blessing like that which thou didst grant to thy disciples at thy ascension into heaven; grant me a blessing that may change, consecrate, and unite me perfectly to thee, and may fill me with thy Spirit, and be to me in this life a foretaste of those blessings which thou reservest for thy elect in heaven.
