Resigned (?) 1680 in favour of Henry Purcell. Gentleman of the Chapels Royal, March 16, 1673. Succeeded Pelham Humphreys as Master of the Children, July, 1674. Succeeded Wise as Master of the Boys and Almoner of St. Paul's Cathedral, 1687. Re-appointed Organist of Westminster Abbey on the death of Purcell in 1695. He was the first Composer to the Chapels Royal on the establishment of that office in 1699. The Cheque Book of the Chapels Royal records his death on October 1, 1708, and describes him as Organist, Composer, and Master of the Children.
