Strona 8 - The authority of the holy Scripture, for which it ought to be believed and obeyed, dependeth not upon the testimony of any man or church, but wholly upon God (who is truth itself), the Author thereof; and therefore it is to be received, because it is the Word of God.
Strona 8 - The whole counsel of God concerning all things necessary for his own glory, man's salvation, faith and life, is either expressly set down in scripture, or by good and necessary consequence may be deduced from scripture ; unto which nothing at any time is to be added, whether by new revelations of the Spirit or traditions of men.
Strona 6 - Legend and annal, war-song and psalm, State-roll and biography, the mighty voices of prophets, the parables of Evangelists, stories of mission journeys, of perils by the sea and among the heathen, philosophic arguments, apocalyptic visions, all were flung broadcast over minds unoccupied for the most part by any rival learning.
Strona 3 - No greater moral change ever passed over a nation than passed over England during the years which parted the middle of the reign of Elizabeth from the meeting of the Long Parliament. England became the people of a book, and that book was the Bible.
Strona 1 - BOOK ! infinite sweetness ! let my heart Suck every letter, and a honey gain, Precious for any grief in any part ; To clear the breast, to mollify all pain. Thou art all health, health thriving, till it make A full eternity : thou art a mass Of strange delights, where we may wish and take. Ladies, look here ; this is the thankful glass, That mends the looker's eyes : this is the well That washes what it shows.
Strona 11 - III. The books commonly called Apocrypha, not being of divine inspiration, are no part of the canon of the scripture ; and therefore are of no authority in the church of God, nor to be any otherwise approved or made use of, than other human writings.
Strona 20 - Bible, a book which, if everything else in our language should perish, would alone suffice to show the whole extent of its beauty and power.
Strona 4 - And behold, it shall come to pass that my servants shall be sent forth to the east and to the west, to the north and to the south; 64.
Strona 21 - Is it fit, do you suppose, for one who occupies a lofty station in the Church of Christ, to encourage himself in such childishness ? " When I was a child," said St. Paul, "I spake as a child ; but, when I became a man, I put away childish things.
Strona 19 - There are no songs comparable to the songs of Zion ; no orations equal to those of the Prophets ; and no politics like those which the Scriptures teach.
