MY DEAR SIR OSWALD,

If I have transgressed by writing too large a work, I must not further transgress by writing too long a Dedication. -Before I came into this part of the kingdom, I knew that you advocated the diffusion of sound knowledge through the community: and it now gives me real pleasure in having the honour of dedicating to you a work which has that object in view. The pleasure which I feel on this occasion is only diminished by the consciousness which I have of the manifold imperfection of my performance.

You, however, are in no respect accountable for the errors and defects of any kind which may be found on my pages. Your acceptance of the dedication is, in fact, only a proof of your kindness, and of your readiness to favour an attempt, however feeble, to communicate instruction to those who need it.

Neither you nor myself, I am fully persuaded, idolize Knowledge. We esteem it, and we wish to see it circulated in
