Let us, beloved brethren, pray to our Lord Jesus Christ for this His (or these) servant (or servants), who for the love of Him hastens (or hasten) to lay aside the vanity of the world, that He would give him (or her, or them) His Holy Spirit, so that an earnest desire may be continually enkindled in his (or her, or their) heart to keep the commandments of God and of our holy Statutes, and to guard his (or her, or their) mind from all over - anxiety about worldly cares and from

D. Do you promise to keep the holy Rule of the Statutes of the Third Order?

R. I promise it, with the help of God.

So be it.

All the Brothers or Sisters answer:

The Father Director, turning towards the altar, says:

O Lord, stretch forth the right hand of Thy mercy on these Thy faithful servants, that they may seek Thee with their whole hearts, and may deserve to obtain what they worthily ask for.

Grant, O Lord, to Thy servants pardon of their sins, consolation in life, and perpetual guidance, that, serving Thee faithfully, they may ever obtain Thy mercy.

Defend, we beseech Thee, O Lord, by the intercession of blessed Mary ever Virgin, this Thy fa

CEREMONY OF CLOTHING.

On the day fixed, the Director, in surplice and stole, being seated in a chair placed on the steps of the altar, on the Gospel side, the two masters (or mistresses) of the novices conduct the person about to be clad to the kneeling-desk, covered with a cloth prepared by the Sacristan, before the middle of the altar, where being on his (or her) knees, the two masters (or mistresses) on either side, the Director.says:

What do you ask, my Brother (or Sister)?

The person to be received answers, with great modesty, and in a distinct voice:

My reverend Father, I pray you, for the love of God, to give me the holy habit of penance of the Third Order of the seraphic Father St. Francis, that I may serve God better by a perfect observance of his commandments, and of the rule of the said Order.

The Director now pronounces an exhortation suitable to the occasion, and afterwards intones the Veni Creator, which the assistants continue.

Veni Creator Spiritus,

Mentes tuorum visita,
Imple superna gratia,

Quæ tu creasti pectora.
