HEN Jofeph fell upon his Father's Face, and wept upon him, and kiffed him. He also appointed the Phyficians his Servants to embalm his Father: So they embalmed Ifrael. Forty Days being fulfilled, as is cuftomary when Persons are embalmed, the Egyptians mourned for him yet feventy Days. And as foon as the Days of Mourning were over, Jofeph thus spoke to Pharaoh's Family; If now I have found Favour from you, in this Manner intercede for me with Pharaoh : My Father when dying made me affure him, that he should be buried in the Tomb which he had cut out for himself in the Land of Canaan. So now, I entreat you, to allow, me to go up, and bury my Father, and I fhall return. And Pharaoh faid, Go up, and bury your Father, as he made you affure him. Then Jofeph went up to bury his Father; and all Pharaoh's Servants, the

Elders of his House, and the Elders of the Land of Egypt went up with him; as did alfo Jofeph's own Family, his Brothers and his Father's Family; but they left their Little ones, their Flocks, and their Herds in the Land of Gofben: Both Chariots and Horsemen went up with him; fo they were a very great Company. When they came to Atad's Thrething-Floor, after having paft over Jordan, they there mourned with a very fore Lamentation: He there for feven Days made a Mourning for his Father. When the Canaanites, the Inhabitants of the Land, faw this Mourning in Atad's Floor, they faid, This is a fore Mourning among the Egyptians; wherefore the Name of the Place was called *AbelMizraim, which is as you pass over Jordan. Thus his Sons did by him as he directed them; for they brought him into the Land of Canaan, and buried him in the Cave in the Field of Machpelah, over-against Mamrah, which Abraham bought from Ephron the Hittite for a Burying-Ground. Then Jofeph, and his Brothers, and all who had gone up with him to bury his Father, returned with him into Egypt after the Burial was over. But Joseph's Brothers faid, when they faw that their Father was dead, Perhaps Jofeph will hate us, and revenge himfelf upon us, for all the Evil that we did *The Mourning of the Egyptians.

him. So they fent Meffengers to Jofeph, with Commiffion to fay, Your Father before his Death gave us this Direction, Thus ye fhall fay to Jofeph, Forgive, I entreat, your Brothers their Wickedness and Crime, for they devised Evil against you: And now, we beseech you, to forgive the Crime of the Servants of the Gods of your Fathers. Jofeph wept when they spoke to him: His Brothers alfo went and fell down before him, and faid, Behold now, we are your Servants. But he faid to them, Fear not; for I * am under the Gods. Ye indeed intended Evil against me; the Gods tho' defigned for Good, in order to fave many alive, as is now done. Therefore fear not; I will nourish you, and your Little ones. Thus he comforted them, and and spoke kindly to them. So Jofeph and his Father's Family continued to dwell in Egypt; and he lived one hundred and ten Years, and faw Ephraim's Children of the third Generation; the Children alfo of Machir, Manaleh's Son, were brought up upon Jofeph's Knees. Then Jofeph faid to his Kinfmen, I fhall die; but the Gods fhall vifiting vifit you, and bring you out of this Land, into the Land which he promised to Abraham, Ifaac, and Jacob. And he caused the Children of Ifrael to give him Affurances in this Manner; When
