PREFACE.

AT the request of several friends and hearers, these Sermons are published by the Author, who is conscious both of the great importance of their subject, and the many imperfections in the manner in which it has been treated.

Not a few of the leading thoughts will be found in a most admirable work entitled The Domestic Constitution, by the Rev. Christopher Anderson, of Edinburgh; to the perusal of which, and the deep impression made by it on his own mind, the Author is indebted for the first idea of treating the subject in a connected series of discourses from the pulpit. If the reader of this little volume should be induced, in a spirit of prayer, to consult that excellent treatise, to imbibe the spirit in which it is written, and to become thoroughly acquainted with the sound Scriptural principles which are propounded, and the rich Scriptural illustrations which are adduced in it, the Author will be satisfied that this imperfect attempt, to follow in the same track, has not been in vain.
