detonator and by the explosive itself. The force of cooled explosives does not seem to be appreciably diminished by cooling, nor the propagation of the explosion wave.

Absorption of Ultra-violet Rays by Acetylene.Victor Henri and Marc Landau.-The ultra-violet absorption spectrum of gaseous acetylene is a fluted spectrum possessing a great number of bands. These bands can be arranged in three groups, one from λ = 3157 to λ = 2880, the next from 2800 to 2500, and the third from 2327 5 to 2236 4. Alcoholic solutions of acetylene show only one very broad absorption band, beginning at about 2850 and having a maximum at 2631.

Study of the System: Antimony Sulphide-Lead Sulphide.-H. Pélabon.-The formation of compounds TUESDAY, 3rd.-Royal Institution, 3. of lead and antimony sulphide is not revealed by the occurrence of maxima in the temperatures of solidification, because when they fuse they decompose, but the existence of transition points and microscopic examination both reveal their formation. The formation of zincenite, Sb2S3PbS, and of jamesonite, Sb2S3.2PbS, is thus plainly detected.

Action of a3-Dichlorethyl Oxide on Mixed Magnesium Derivatives.-MM. Lespieau and Bresch.a-8-Dichlorethyl oxide readily attacks the magnesium derivative of acetylene, giving as the chief product a substance of formula C10H1602Cl2. With bromine it gives two bromides, both corresponding to the formula C10H1602Cl2Br2. The solubilities of these two bromides are very different, and the less soluble melts at 107-108°, while the melting point of the other is 71–72°.

Methyl Magnesium Iodide.-Pierre Jolibois.-When methyl magnesium iodide is heated to 240° methane is evolved and a yellow mass of formula Mg2C.2MgI2 is left. The equation is 2 [MgI2Mg(CH3)2] = 3CH4+ Mg2C.2MgI2. At 600° no further evolution of gas takes place. With water the yellow compound reacts violently, nearly pure methane being evolved.

Halochromism of Derivatives of Phenylisoxazolone and of Indogenides.-André Meyer.-Certain colourless or faintly coloured organic compounds possess the power of giving coloured salts with acids, and the coloration cannot be explained by the creation of a chromphore group or a quinonic group. This phenomenon has been called halochromism. The author has found that the derivatives of phenylisoxazolone and the indogenides and their congeners also exhibit this phenomenon.

MISCELLANEOUS.

Literary Intelligence.-Messrs. J. and A. Churchill, of 7, Great Marlborough Street, W., have nearly ready an English translation of the Italian work, "A Treatise on General and Industrial Organic Chemistry," by Dr. Ettore Molinari. The work of translation has been carried out by Mr. T. H. Pope, of the School of Malting and Brewing, of the University of Birmingham. The text contains 500 illustrations.

Reduction under Pressure of Dissolved Oxygen to Hydrogen Peroxide.-Franz Fischer and Otto Priess. The authors have constructed a steel apparatus in which a solution of oxygen in 1 per cent sulphuric acid can be electrolysed under pressure. The yields of hydrogen peroxide increase as the pressure of the oxygen is raised, and when the terminal voltage is 2 volts and the current density is 2 amps. per sq. dm., at a pressure of 100 at., 2.7 per cent peroxide solutions can be obtained, with an energy efficiency of 300-400 grms. of hydrogen peroxide per kilowatt hour (current efficiency 83 per cent).
