II. Faith, thus receiving and refting on Chrift and his righteoufnefs, is the alone inftrument of justification; yet is it

redemption that is in Jefus Chrift; V. 25.Whom God hath fet forth to be a propitiation through faith in his blocd, to declare his righteoufnefs for the remiffion of fins that are paft, through the forbearance of God. V. 27. Where is boafting then? It is excluded. By what law? of works? Nay; but by the law of faith. V. 28.Therefore we conclude that a man is juftified by faith without the deeds of the law. Tit. iii. 5. Not by works of righteoufnefs which we have done, ut according to his mercy he faved us, bythe washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Shoft: V. 7. That being juftified by his grace, we fhould be made heirs according to the hope of eternal life. Eph. i. 7. In whom we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of fins, according to the riches of his grace. Jer. xxiii. 6. In, his days Judah fhall be faved, and If rael shall dwell fately and this is his name whereby he shall be called. THE LORD OUR RIGHTEOUSNESS. 1 Cor. i. 30. But of him are ye in Chrift Jefus, who of God is made unto ys wifdom, and righteousness, and fanctification, and. redemption: V. 31. That, according as it is written, He that glorieth, let him glory in the Lord. Rom. v. 17. For if by one man's offence death reigned by one, much more they which receive abundance of grace, and of the gift of righteoufnefs, fhall reign in life by one, Jefus Christ. V. 18. Therefore as by

the offence of one judgment came upon all men to condemnation : even fo by the righteouinels of one, the free gift came upon all men unto juftification of life. V. 19. For as by one man's difobedience many were made finners; fo by the obedience of one thall many be made righteous.

Adis x. 44. While Peter yet fpake thefe words the Holy Ghost fell on all them which heard the word. Gal. ii. 16. Knowing that a man is not juftified by the works of the law, but by the faith of Jefus Chrift; even we have believed in Jefus Chrift, that we might be juftified by the faith of Christ, and not by the works of the law: for by the works of the law shall no flesh be juftified. it not alone in the person juftified, but is ever accompanied with all other faving graces, and is no dead faith, but worketh by love.

III. Chrift, by his obedience and death, did fully discharge the debt of all thofe that are thus juftified, and did make a proper, real, and full fatisfaction to his Father's juftice in their behalf. Yet, in as much as he was given by the Fa

power to become the fons of God, even to them that believe on his name. Rom. iii. 28.Therefore we conclude that a man is juftified by faith without the deeds of the law. Rom. v. 1. Therefore, being juftified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jefus Chrift.

e James ii. 17. Even fo faith, if it hath not works, is dead, being alone. V. 22. Seeft thou how faith wrought with his works, and by works was faith made perfect? V. 26. For as the body without the fpirit is dead, fo faith without works is dead alfo. Gal. v. 6. IV. God did, from all eternity,, decree to justify all the elec1; and Chrift did, in the fulness of time, die for their fins, iRom. iii. 24. Being juftified freely by his grace, through the "redemption that is in Jefus Chrift. Eph. f. 7. In whom we have redemption through his blood, the forgivenefs of fins, according to the riches of his grace.

IV. Gal. iii. 8. And the fcripture, forefeeing that God would juftify the Heathen through faith, preached before the gofpel unto Abraham, faying, In thee fhall all nations be bleffed. 1 Pet. i. 2.. Elect according to the foreknowledge of God the Father, through fanctification of the Spirit unto obedience and fprinkling of the blood of Jefus Chrift. V. 19. But with the precious blood of Chrift, as of a lamb without blemish and without fpot: V. 20. Who verily was fore ordained before the foundation of the world, but was manifeft in thefe laft times for you, Rom. viii. 30. Moreover, « whom he did predeftinate, them he alfo called; and whom he called, them he alfo juftified; and whom he juftified, them he allo glorified.

God doth continue to forgive the fins of thofe that are juftified and although they can never fall from the state of juftification, yet they may by their fins fall under God's fatherly difpleasure, and rot have the light of his countenance reftored unto them, until they humble themselves, confess their fins, beg pardon, and renew their faith and repentance 1. Which he fhed on usabundantly through Jefus Chrift our Saviour; V. 7. That being juftified by his grace, we fhould be made heirs according to the hope of eternal life.

V. Mat. vi. 12. And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. 1 John i. 7. But if we walk in the light, as he is in the ght, we have fellowship one with

another; and the blood of Jefus Chrift his Son cleanfeth us from all fin. V. 9. If we confefs our fins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our fins, and to cleanse as from all unrighteousness. 1 John i. 1. My little children, these things write I unto you, that ye fin not. And if any man fin, we have and Advocate with the Father, Jefus Chrift the righteous. V.2.And he is the propitiation for our fins and not for ours only, but also for the fins of the whole world.

P Luke xxii. 32. But I have prayed for thee, that thy faith fail not; and when thou art converted ftrengthen thy brethren. John x. 28. And I give unto them eternal life, and they fhall never perifh, neither fhall any pluck them out of my hand. Heb. x. 14. For by one offering he hath perfected for ever them that are fanctified.

CHAP. XII. Of Adoption.

LL thofe that are justified, God vouchfafeth, in and for his only Son Jefus Chrift, to make partakers of the grace of adoption: by which they are taken into the number, and enjoy the liberties and privileges, of the children of God;

Make me to hear joy and gladnefs, that the bones which thou haft broken may rejoice. V. 9. Hide thy face from my fins, and blot out all mine iniquities. V. 1o. Create in me a clean heart, OGod; and renew a right spirit within me. V. 11. Caft me not away from thy prefence; and take not thy Holy Spirit from me. V. 12. Reftore unto me the joy of thy falvation; and uphold me with thy free Spirit. Pf. xxxii. 5. I acknowledged my fin unto thee, and mine iniquity have I not hid: I faid, I will confefs my tranfgreffiors unto the Lord; and thou forgaveft the iniquity of my fin. Mat. xxvi. 75. And Peter remembered the words of Jefus, which faid unto him, Before the cock crow thou shalt deny me thrice.. And he went out and wept bitterly. I Cor. xi. 30. For this cause many are weak and fickly among you, and many fleep. V.32. But when we are judged we are chaftened of the Lord, that we fhould not be condemned with the world. Luke i. 20. And, behold, thon fhalt be dumb, and not able to speak, until the day that thefe things fhall be performed, becaufe thon believeft not my words, which fhall be fulfilled in their season.
