II. God alone is Lord of the confcience, and hath left it free from the doctrines and commandments of men which are in any thing contrary to his word, or befide it, in matters of faith or worship'. So that to believe fuch doctrines, or

neither our fathers nor we were able to bear? V. 11. But we believe that through the grace of the Lord Jefus Chrift we fhall be faved, even as they.

to obey fuch commandments out of confcience, is to betray true liberty of confcience; and the requiring of an im plicit faith, and an abfolute and blind obedience, is to deftroy liberty of confcience, and reafon alfo ".

IIL They who, upon pretence of Christian liberty, do prac tife any fin, or cherish any luft, do thereby deftroy the end of Christian

dominion over your faith, but are helpers of your joy: for by faith ye ftand. Mat. xv. 9. But in vain they do worship me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men.

Col. ii. 20. Wherefore, if ye be dead with Chrift from the rudiments of the world, why, as though living in the world, are ye fubject to ordinances, V. 22. Which all are to perish with the uling, after the commandments and doctrines of men? V. 23. Which things have indeed a fhew of wisdom in will-worship, and humility, and neglecting of the body; not in any honour to the fatisfying of the flesh. Gal. i. ro. For do I now perfuade men or God? or do I feek to please men? for if I yet pleafed men, I fhould not be the fervant of Chrift. Gal. ii. 4. And that because of false brethren unawares brought in, who came in privily to fpy out our liberty which we have in Chrift Jefus, that they might bring us into bondage. V.5. To whom we gave place by fubjection, no, not for an hour; that the truth of the gofpel might continue with you. Gal. v. I. Stand faft, therefore, in the liberty wherewith Chrift hath made us free, and be not entangled again with the yoke of bondage.

Rom. x. 17. So then, faith cometh by hearing, and hearing

by the word ofGod. Rom. xiv. 23. And he that doubteth is damned if he eat, because he eateth not of faith: for whatfoever is not of faith is fin. Ifa. viii. 20. To the law, and to the teftimony: if they fpeak not according to this word, it is because there is no light in them. Acts xvii. 11. The wife men are afhamed, they are difmayed and taken : lo, they have rejected the word of the Lord, and what wisdom is in them?

III.° Gal.

Christian liberty; which is, that, being delivered out of the hands of our enemies, we might ferve the Lord without fear, in holiness and righteousness before him, all the days of our life.

IV. And because the powers which God hath ordained, and the liberty which Chrift hath purchased, are not intend-ed by God to deftroy, but mutually to uphold and preferve one another; they who, upon pretence of Chriftian liberty, fhall oppofe any lawful power, or the lawful exercise of it, whether it be civil or ecclefiaftical, resist the ordinance of God P. And for their publishing of fuch opinions, or maintaining of fuch practices, as are contrary to the light of nature, or to the known principles of Christianity, whether concerning faith, worship, or converfation; or to the power of godlinefs; or fuch erroneous opinions or practices, as either in their own nature, or in the manner of publifhing or maintaining them, are deftructive to the external peace and order which Chrift hath established in the church; they may lawfully be called to account, and proceeded

III. Gal. v. 13. For, brethren, ye have been called unto liberty; only ufe not liberty for an occafion to the flesh, but by love ferve one another. 1 Pet. ii. 16. CHAP. XXI. Of Religious Worship and the Sabbath-day. THE light of nature fheweth that there is a God, who hath lordship and sovereignty over all; is good, and

which are evil: and thou haft tried them which say they are apostles, and are not; and haft found them lyars. V. 14. But I have a few things against thee, becaufe thou haft there them that hold the doctrine of Balaam, who taught Balac to caft a ftumbling-block before the childrenf Ifrael, to eat things facrificed unto idols, and to commit fornication.
