articulis doctrinæ ab illo defensæ professionem ipsemet ederem, ac simul debitâ in emendandis ac expoliendis adeo egregiis operibus accuratione, Reipubl. Literariæ, præsertim Anglicanæ, cui plurimum debeo, quodammodo inservirem; id operis tandem in me suscipiendum duxi.*

J. E. Grabe, S. P. D.

[TRANSLATION.]

Having weighed and considered the matter somewhat further, the occasion offered to me, seemed very opportune. By it I could not only attest my particular veneration for the great name of Bull; but at the same time, together with his writings, might publish abroad my own profession of the orthodox doctrine, in the two chief articles of the Christian Faith so ably defended by him. Also, by correcting and finishing his excellent works with that degree of accuracy to which they are entitled, I might in some measure do a service to the Republic of Letters, especially to that in England, to which I am so much indebted. Thus I have been induced to undertake the present work.

Primitiva et Apostolica Traditio Dogmatis in Ecclesia Catholicâ recepti de Jesus Christi Servatoris nostri Divinitate: Asserta atque evidenter demonstrata contra Danielem Zuickerum Borussum, ejusque nuperos in Anglia Sectatores. 1703.

The following account from Nichols's Literary Anecdotes, assigns the date of 1712 to his Sermons, &c. in English; which, of course, must have been posthumous:

"Whereas in the violence of a sudden fire, on Friday, 29th Jan. last, the printing-office of W. Bowyer, in Whitefriars, was burned to the

ground; this is to acquaint the world, that part of the impression of Bishop Bull's "Important Points of Primitive Christianity maintained and defended in several sermons and discourses, to which is prefixed the history of his life, by R. Nelson, Esq." was consumed in the flames. By which misfortune, we are obliged to defer the publication of Bishop Bull's " Important Points," &c. All the last sheets are reprinting, which we hope will be finished in a fortnight's time. London: printed for Richard Smith, at the sign of Bishop Beveridge's Head, in Pater Noster Row, near Cheapside; and in the Fore Walk of Exeter Change, in the Strand.

Evening Post, Feb. 13, 1712.
